Psalms 59:13

_CONSUME THEM IN WRATH, CONSUME THEM, THAT THEY MAY NOT BE: AND LET THEM KNOW THAT GOD RULETH IN JACOB UNTO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH. SELAH._ Consume them in wrath. Such was Saul's fate, and such that of the Jews who opposed David's antitype, Messiah. Such shall be the doom of Antichrist's followers in the last days. AND LET THEM KNOW THAT GOD RULETH IN JACOB UNTO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH. The Hebrew accents require the sense, 'let them know unto the ends of the earth that God ruleth in Jacob.' So David said in his conflict with Goliath (1 Samuel 17:4, end). So in the punishment of Antichrist's hosts the recognition of God's rule in Israel shall be forced on the world (Isaiah 66:15; Isaiah 66:23)

13_Consume, consume them in wrath, that they may not be _David may seem to contradict himself in praying for the utter destruction of his enemies, when immediately before he had expressed his desire that they might not be exterminated at once. (374) What else could he mean when he asks that God would consume them in wrath, but that he would cut them off suddenly, and not by a gradual and slower process of punishment? But he evidently refers in what he says here to a different point of time, and this removes any apparent inconsistency, for he prays that when they had been set up for a sufficient period as an example, they might eventually be devoted to destruction. CONSUME THEM IN WRATH - Or, in thy justice. The idea in the word “consume” here is to finish; to complete; to bring to an end. It does not mean to “burn” them as our word might seem to imply, nor is there any reference to the “mode” or “manner” in which their power was to be brought to an end. It is merely a prayer that all their plans might be frustrated; that there might be an entire completion of their attempts; or that they might be in no sense successful. LIX. The Ps. seems to be directed against Jewish and not foreign enemies. It might well be a prayer for the downfall of the aristocratic Sadducees. On the other hand in Psalms 59:5 and Psalms 59:8 the Psalmist prays against heathen. But a slight change gives the word we need, viz. proud (_cf._ Psalms 9:17). PSALMS 59:6 is a variant of Psalms 59:14; it is in its right place after Psalms 59:13....
