Psalms 59:16

_AND AT EVENING LET THEM RETURN; AND LET THEM MAKE A NOISE LIKE A DOG, AND GO ROUND ABOUT THE CITY._ -Second part of the second division. David's anticipation of the enemy's doom, and of his own joyful thanksgivings, because of the previous prayer: Verse 14,15. AND AT EVENING LET THEM RETURN; AND LET THEM MAKE A NOISE LIKE A DOG ... LET THEM WANDER UP AND DOWN FOR MEAT, AND GRUDGE IF THEY BE NOT SATISFIED. What was an assertion in Psalms 59:6 appears here as a sentence of doom, "let them," etc. Their sin was restless greediness and insatiable cruelty, whereby they came tumultuously besieging David's house "at evening" (1 Samuel 19:11); so let their punishment be to "wander up and down." In hell men's restless passions shall be their never-resting scourges ...

16_But I will sing of thy power _By this he does not mean merely that he would have occasion to sing at some future period, but prepares himself presently for the exercise of thanksgiving; and he proceeds to acknowledge that his deliverance would be at once an illustrious effect of Divine power, and conferred of mere grace. It may be true, that David escaped at this time from the hands of his enemies without stir, and with secrecy, through the dexterity of his wife; still, by means of this artifice, God disappointed the preparations and forces of Saul, and may, therefore, with propriety be said to have exerted his power. We may suppose, however, that David takes occasion, from this particular instance, to look further back, and embrace, in his view, the various Divine interpositions which he had experienced....

8-17 It is our wisdom and duty, in times of danger and difficulty, to wait upon God; for he is our defence, in whom we shall be safe. It is very comfortable to us, in prayer, to look to God as the God of our mercy, the Author of all good in us, and the Giver of all good to us. The wicked can never be satisfied, which is the greatest misery in a poor condition. A contented man, if he has not what he would have, yet he does not quarrel with Providence, nor fret within himself. It is not poverty, but discontent that makes a man unhappy. David would praise God because he had many times, and all along, found Him his refuge in the day of trouble. He that is all this to us, is certainly worthy of our best affections, praises, and services. The trials of his people will end in joy and praise. When the night of affliction is over, they will sing of the Lord's power and mercy in the morning. Let...

Verse Psalms 59:16. _I WILL SING OF THY POWER_] For it was because thy _hand_ was upon me for good, that I have thus succeeded in my enterprises. _YEA, I WILL SING ALOUD OF THY MERCY_] I shall publish abroad what thou hast done; and done not for _my worthiness_, nor for the _worthiness_ of the _people_; but for thy own _mercy's_ sake. _IN THE DAY OF MY TROUBLE._] When I came with small means and feeble help, and had the force and fraud of many enemies to contend with, besides the corruption and unfaithfulness of my own people; _thou_ wast then _my defence_; and in all attacks, whether _open_ or _covered, my_ sure _refuge_. I will, therefore, _sing of_ _thy mercy in the morning_-I will _hasten_ to acquit myself of a duty I owe to thee for such singular interposition

BUT I WILL SING OF THY POWER - That is, I will praise thee for the manifestation of thy power in rescuing me from danger. YEA, I WILL SING ALOUD OF THY MERCY IN THE MORNING - When the light dawns; when these troubles are over; when the night of calamity shall have passed by. There is an allusion here, probably, to the fact that they encompassed the place of his abode at night Psalms 59:6, Psalms 59:14; but there is also the implied idea that that night was emblematic of sorrow and distress. The morning would come; morning after such a night of sorrow and trouble; a morning of joy and gladness, when he would feel that he had complete deliverance. Then would he praise God aloud. EXPOSITION LIKE Psalms 56:1 and Psalms 57:1, this is a cry for deliverance out of great peril, with a final expression of confidence (verses 16, 17) that the deliverance will be granted. From the psalm itself there is some difficulty in determining who are the enemies against whom aid is sought, since, while the bulk of the allusions suggest domestic enemies, there is distinct mention of the "heathen" in two places (Psalms 57:5, Psalms 57:8). LIX. The Ps. seems to be directed against Jewish and not foreign enemies. It might well be a prayer for the downfall of the aristocratic Sadducees. On the other hand in Psalms 59:5 and Psalms 59:8 the Psalmist prays against heathen. But a slight change gives the word we need, viz. proud (_cf._ Psalms 9:17). PSALMS 59:6 is a variant of Psalms 59:14; it is in its right place after Psalms 59:13....
