6_Arise, O Jehovah _David here sets the anger of God in opposition to the rage of his enemies; and when we are in similar circumstances we should act in the same manner. When the ungodly are inflamed against us, and cast forth their rage and fury to destroy us, we ought humbly to beseech God to be inflamed also on his side; in other words, to show in truth that he has, no less zeal and power to preserve us, than they have inclination to destroy us. The word, _Arise, _is taken in a figurative sense, for _to ascend into a judgment-seat, or _rather _to prepare one’s self to make resistance; _and it is here applied to God, because, while he delays to succour us, we are very apt to think him asleep. Accordingly, David also, a little after, beseeches him _to awake; _for it seemed on the part of God something like the forgetfulness of sleep to give no assistance to an individual who was so much...

1-9 David flees to God for succour. But Christ alone could call on Heaven to attest his uprightness in all things. All His works were wrought in righteousness; and the prince of this world found nothing whereof justly to accuse him. Yet for our sakes, submitting to be charged as guilty, he suffered all evils, but, being innocent, he triumphed over them all. The plea is, "For the righteous God trieth the hearts and the reins." He knows the secret wickedness of the wicked, and how to bring it to an end; he is witness to the secret sincerity of the just, and has ways of establishing it. When a man has made peace with God about all his sins, upon the terms of grace and mercy, through the sacrifice of the Mediator, he may, in comparison with his enemies, appeal to God's justice to decide....

Verse Psalms 7:6. _ARISE, O LORD, IN THINE ANGER_] To thee I commit my cause; arise, and sit on the throne of thy judgment in my behalf....

ARISE, O LORD, IN THINE ANGER - That is, to punish him who thus unjustly persecutes me. See the notes at Psalms 3:7. LIFT UP THYSELF - As if he had been lying in repose and inaction. The idea is derived from a warrior who is called on to go forth and meet an enemy. BECAUSE OF THE RAGE OF MINE ENEMIES - Not only of this particular enemy, but of those who were associated with him, and perhaps of all his foes. David felt, on this occasion, that he was surrounded by enemies; and he calls on God to interfere and save him. AND AWAKE FOR ME - Or, in my behalf. The word “awake” is a still stronger expression than those which he had before used. It implies that one had been asleep, and insensible to what had occurred, and he addresses God “as if”

EXPOSITION THE composition of this psalm by David, asserted in the title, is generally allowed. Internal evidence seems to indicate for its date the earlier portion of David's public life—that during which he suffered persecution at the hands of Saul. There are two considerable difficulties connected with the title: (1) the meaning of "Shiggaion of David;" and (2) the determination of the identity of "Cush the Benjamite." "Shiggaion" is connected by some with the "Shigioneth" of Habakkuk 3:1, which is commonly explained to be a particular kind of tune or tunes. But the identity of the two words is uncertain, and the identity of their meaning, at an interval of nearly six centuries, is still more open to question.
