Psalms 92:10

But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil. BUT MY HORN SHALT THOU EXALT LIKE THE HORN OF AN UNICORN - the buffalo, or the wild ox; Hebrew, Reem: i:e., thou exaltest me to strength and dignity. I SHALL BE ANOINTED WITH FRESH OIL - the emblem of gladness; an image from the practice of anointing the head with rich unguents at a feast. The "I" here in the person of the Psalmist represents all the godly. Their elevation follows necessarily upon the ruin of the ungodly (). Because their Lord is "most high forevermore" (), they are 'exalted' on high by Him. He who is height itself, makes them high. 7-15 God sometimes grants prosperity to wicked men in displeasure; yet they flourish but for a moment. Let us seek for ourselves the salvation and grace of the gospel, that being daily anointed by the Holy Spirit, we may behold and share the Redeemer's glory. It is from his grace, by his word and Spirit, that believers receive all the virtue that keeps them alive, and makes them fruitful. Other trees, when old, leave off bearing, but in God's trees the strength of grace does not fail with the strength of nature. The last days of the saints are sometimes their best days, and their last work their best work: perseverance is sure evidence of sincerity. And may every sabbath, while it shows forth the Divine faithfulness, find our souls resting more and more upon the Lord our righteousness...

Verse Psalms 92:10. _LIKE_ THE HORN OF _A UNICORN._] ראים _reeym_, perhaps here, the _oryx_ or _buffalo_. But the _rhinoceros_ seems to be the real _monoceros_ of the Scriptures. _I SHALL BE ANOINTED WITH FRESH OIL._] Perhaps the allusion is here not to any _sacramental_ anointing, but to such anointings as were frequent among the Asiatics, especially after bathing, for the purpose of health and activity....

BUT MY HORN SHALT THOU EXALT - The horn is a symbol of strength or power (see the notes at Psalms 18:2); and the meaning here is, that, while the wicked would be cut off, he would be prospered; that is, he had such confidence that he was the friend of God, that he believed God would honor him and exalt him. The psalmist here speaks of himself not so much with reference to his own particular case, but as the representative of the righteous. The idea is, that God will thus exalt “a righteous man.” LIKE THE HORN OF AN UNICORN - Supposed to be remarkable for the strength of its horn. EXPOSITION THIS psalm is entitled, "a Psalm or Song for the sabbath day," and was therefore, we may conclude, intended for liturgical use in the temple on that weekly festival. Jewish tradition says that it was sung in the morning at the time of the drink offering of the first lamb. It was also, we are told, recited on the second day of the Feast of Tabernacles ('Middoth,' Psalms 2:5). The psalm is altogether one of praise and thanksgiving. It is optimistic, looking forward to the complete destruction of all God's enemies (Psalms 92:7), and the complete triumph and happiness of his faithful ones (Psalms 92:10).
