Psalms 96:8

Give unto the LORD, O ye kindreds of the people, give unto the LORD glory and strength. -Triple call to give unto the Lord glory, strength and worship. So in David's psalm, Psalms 29:1. Verse 7. GIVE UNTO THE LORD, O YE KINDREDS OF THE PEOPLE. In Psalms 29:1 it is, "O ye sons of the mighty" - i:e., angels. He whom all the angels praise as their Lord is in the fullness of time to be praised by all the inhabitants of the earth: then shall the petition be fulfilled, "Thy will be done (by all men) on earth as it is (by all angels) in heaven." 1-9 When Christ finished his work on earth, and was received into his glory in heaven, the church began to sing a new song unto him, and to bless his name. His apostles and evangelists showed forth his salvation among the heathen, his wonders among all people. All the earth is here summoned to worship the Lord. We must worship him in the beauty of holiness, as God in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself. Glorious things are said of him, both as motives to praise and matter of praise....

Verse Psalms 96:8. _COME INTO HIS COURTS._] Probably referring to the _second_ _temple_. The reference must be either to the _tabernacle_ or _temple_....

GIVE UNTO THE LORD THE GLORY DUE UNTO HIS NAME - This also is literally taken from 1 Chronicles 16: Psa 96:1-13 :28. The margin here is, as in Hebrew, of “his name:” the honor of his name. The idea is that which is expressed in our translation. Bring to God what is due to him; or, render such an acknowledgment as he deserves and claims. Acknowledge him as God, and acknowledge him to be such a God as he is. Let the honor due to God as such be given him; and let the honor due to him, for the character which he actually has, be ascribed to him. BRING AN OFFERING - This is language taken from the temple-worship, and means that God is to be worshipped, in the manner which he has prescribed, as a suitable expression of his majesty. EXPOSITION THIS psalm occurs, with very little change, in 1 Chronicles 16:23-13, and is there (1 Chronicles 16:7) ascribed to David. It is also entitled, "A Psalm of David," in the Septuagint. GIVE UNTO THE LORD, &C.— After David has exhorted the people to praise and to give thanks to God for his peculiar mercies to them, he breaks out into a rapture of gratitude, in contemplation of the infinite bounty and benignity of the Creator; and calls upon the whole creation to fill up the chorus of his praise; _Give unto the Lord,_ &c. to the end of the psalm.
