Psalms 96:9

Give unto the LORD, O ye kindreds of the people, give unto the LORD glory and strength. -Triple call to give unto the Lord glory, strength and worship. So in David's psalm, Psalms 29:1. Verse 7. GIVE UNTO THE LORD, O YE KINDREDS OF THE PEOPLE. In Psalms 29:1 it is, "O ye sons of the mighty" - i:e., angels. He whom all the angels praise as their Lord is in the fullness of time to be praised by all the inhabitants of the earth: then shall the petition be fulfilled, "Thy will be done (by all men) on earth as it is (by all angels) in heaven." 'The difference between heaven and earth can only be temporary. The manifestation of the Lord's holy arm must remove that difference in His own time' (Hengstenberg). Verse 8. Bring an offering...

9_Worship before Jehovah _The Psalmist prosecutes the same train of sentiment. In requiring oblations of his people, God was not to be considered as standing in need of the services of the creature, but as giving them an opportunity of professing their faith. The true reason, therefore, is here mentioned why the oblation was enjoined, That his people might prostrate themselves before him, and acknowledge that they and all belonging to them were his. Mention is made of _the beauty of the temple, _referring to the fact that the Gentiles should be raised to a new honor, in being associated into one body with God’s chosen people. 1-9 When Christ finished his work on earth, and was received into his glory in heaven, the church began to sing a new song unto him, and to bless his name. His apostles and evangelists showed forth his salvation among the heathen, his wonders among all people. All the earth is here summoned to worship the Lord. Verse Psalms 96:9. _WORSHIP THE LORD IN THE BEAUTY OF HOLINESS_] I think בהדרת קדש _behadrath kodesh_, signifies _holy ornaments_, such as the high priest wore in his ministrations. These were given him for _glory_ and _beauty_; and the psalmist calls on him to put on his sacerdotal garments, to bring his offering, מנחה _minchah_, and come into the courts of the Lord, and perform his functions, and make intercession for the people....

O WORSHIP THE LORD IN THE BEAUTY OF HOLINESS - This verse is literally taken from 1 Chronicles 16:29. The margin here is, “in the glorious sanctuary.” The Septuagint, ἐν αὐλῇ ἁγίᾳ _en_ _aulē_ _hagia_ - “in his holy court.” So the Latin Vulgate. On the meanings of the expression, see the notes at Psalms 29:2. FEAR BEFORE HIM, ALL THE EARTH - All lands; all people. The word rendered “fear” means properly to writhe, to twist, to be in pain; and then, to tremble, to quake, to be afraid. The word “tremble” would perhaps best express the idea here. EXPOSITION THIS psalm occurs, with very little change, in 1 Chronicles 16:23-13, and is there (1 Chronicles 16:7) ascribed to David. It is also entitled, "A Psalm of David," in the Septuagint.
