Verse 10. _I_ AM _MY BELOVED'S, AND HIS DESIRE_ IS _TOWARD ME._] It is worthy of remark that the word which we translate _his desire_ is the very same used Genesis 3:16: _Thy desire_, thy ruling appetite, תשוקתך _teshukathech, shall be_ _to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee_. This was a part of the woman's curse. Now here it seems to be _reversed_; for the bride says, _I am my beloved's_, and _his desire_ or _ruling appetite_ and _affection_, תשוקתו teshukatho, is עלי _ali_, UPON ME. The old MS. translates this with considerable force:-_I to my leef, and_ _to me the turnynge of him_....

These are the words of the church, strongly expressing the assurance of faith she had of her union to Christ, and interest in him; which shows that "that" grace is attainable, and that there may be a continuation of the exercise of it; it may be expressed again and again, as it is by the church in this Song, Song of Solomon 2:16; and that the exercise of it often follows, upon the enjoyment of Christ's presence, as here, upon his going tap to the palm tree; and that this grace has no tendency to licentiousness, but excites to duty, and makes more careful in it, of which Song of Solomon 7:11 is a proof, "Come, let us go forth", c. CHAPTER 7 The rapturous outburst in praise of the bride, the saved and glorified remnant of Israel, with which this chapter begins, must not be put into the lips of the bridegroom, the Messiah-King. It is the praise of the daughters of Jerusalem, who now recognize her as the beloved of the King. Her highest confession is found in this chapter. He begins to speak of her with Song of Solomon 7:6, “How fair and pleasant art thou, my love, in delights.” She answers His expressions of love. “I am my Beloved's, and His desire is toward me.” This is the highest--to know she possesseth Him and that His heart's delight is in her.
