10_Not thievish but shewing all good faith _He censures two vices that are common among servants, petulant replies, and a propensity to steal. (246) The comedies are full of instances of excessively ready talk, by which servants cheat their masters. Nor was it without reason that an exchange of names took place in ancient times, by which “servant “and “thief “became convertible terms. Thus prudence requires that we make our instructions apply to the morals of each individual. 9,10 Servants must know and do their duty to their earthly masters, with a reference to their heavenly one. In serving an earthly master according to Christ's will, He is served; such shall be rewarded by him. Not giving disrespectful or provoking language; but to take a check or reproof with silence, not making confident or bold replies. When conscious of a fault, to excuse or justify it, doubles it. Never putting to their own use that which is their master's, nor wasting the goods they are trusted with. Showing all good fidelity to improve a master's goods, and promote his thriving. Verse 10. _NOT PURLOINING_] μη νοσφιζομενους. Neither _giving_ _away, privately selling_, nor in any way _wasting_, the master's goods. The word signifies, not only _stealing_ but _embezzling_ another's property; _keeping back a part of the price_ of any commodity sold on the master's account. In Acts 5:2, we translate it, _to keep back part of the price_; the crime of which Ananias and Sapphira were guilty. It has been remarked that among the heathens this species of fraud was very frequent; and servants were so noted for purloining and embezzling their master's property that _fur_, which signifies a _thief_, was commonly used to signify a _servant_; hence that verse in Virgil, Eclog. iii. 16: - _Quid domini faciant, audent cum talia_ FURES?...

NOT PURLOINING - Not to appropriate to themselves what belongs to their masters. The word “purloin” means, literally, to take or carry away for oneself; and would be applied to an approbation to oneself of what pertained to a common stock, or what belonged to one in whose employ we are - as the embezzlement of public funds. Here it means that the servant was not to apply to his own use what belonged to his master; that is, was not to pilfer - a vice to which, as all know, servants, and especially slaves, are particularly exposed; see the word explained in the notes at Acts 5:2. Titus 2:1. _But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:_ There are certain things which are suitable to go with sound doctrine; they are meet and fit and appropriate thereto. Titus 2:2. _That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience._ Among the heathen, old men often gave themselves up to drunkenness and gluttony; so now, this is the teaching that is to be given to aged Christian men. They need faith, love, and patience, as well as the virtues of sobriety, gravity, and temperance.
