14_Who gave himself for us_. This is another argument of exhortation, drawn from the design or effect of the death of Christ, who offered himself for us, that he might redeem us from the bondage of sin, and purchase us to himself as his heritage. His grace, therefore, necessarily brings along with it “newness of life,” (Romans 6:4,) because they who still are the slaves of sin make void the blessing of redemption; but now we are released from the bondage of sin, in order that we may serve the righteousness of God; and, therefore, he immediately added, — _A peculiar people, zealous of good works; _by which he means that, so far as concerns us, the fruit of redemption is lost, if we are still entangled by the sinful desires of the world. Verse 14. _WHO GAVE HIMSELF FOR US_] Who gave his own life as a _ransom price_ to redeem ours. This is evidently what is meant, as the words λυτρωσηται and λαον περιουσιον imply. The verb λυτροω signifies to _redeem_ or _ransom by paying a price_, as I have often had occasion to observe; and περιουσιος signifies such a _peculiar_ _property_ as a man has in what he has _purchased_ with _his own money._ Jesus gave his life for the world, and thus has purchased men unto himself; and, having purchased the _slaves_ from their thraldom, he is represented as stripping them of their sordid vestments, _cleansing_ and _purifying them unto himself_ that they may become his _own servants_, and bringing them out of their _dishonourable_ and _oppressive servitude_, in which they had no proper motive to _diligence_ and could have no affection for the despot under whose authority they were employed. Titus 2:1. _But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:_ There are certain things which are suitable to go with sound doctrine; they are meet and fit and appropriate thereto. Titus 2:2. _That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience._ Among the heathen, old men often gave themselves up to drunkenness and gluttony; so now, this is the teaching that is to be given to aged Christian men. They need faith, love, and patience, as well as the virtues of sobriety, gravity, and temperance.
