Verse 12. _TEACHING US, THAT, DENYING_, c.] παιδευουσα. Instructing us as _children_ are instructed. Christ is the great teacher and men, in order to learn, must become his disciples-must put themselves under his tuition, and learn of him. _DENYING UNGODLINESS_] ασεβειαν. All things contrary to God; whatever would lead us to doubt his being, deny any of his essential attributes; his providence or government of the world, and his influence on the souls of men. Every thing, also, which is opposed to his true worship; theoretical and practical atheism, deism, and irreligion in general. _WORLDLY LUSTS_] Such desires, affections, and appetites, as men are governed by who have their portion in this life, and live without God in the world. TEACHING US - That is, the “grace of God” so teaches us; or that system of religion which is a manifestation of the grace of God, inculcates the great and important duties which Paul proceeds to state. Titus 2:1. _But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:_ There are certain things which are suitable to go with sound doctrine; they are meet and fit and appropriate thereto. Titus 2:2. _That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience._ Among the heathen, old men often gave themselves up to drunkenness and gluttony; so now, this is the teaching that is to be given to aged Christian men. They need faith, love, and patience, as well as the virtues of sobriety, gravity, and temperance. II. THINGS WHICH BECOME SOUND DOCTRINE CHAPTER 2 _ 1. Adorning the doctrine of our Saviour-God (Titus 2:1)_ 2. (_b_) TITUS 2:11. ITS DOCTRINAL BASIS. The transformed lives thus required from different groups are rendered possible by God's own grace, revealed in the Incarnation. This, for _all_ men (1 Timothy 2:4), is a _saving_ grace, bringing (_a)_ ethical discipline (Titus 2:12), (_b_) the inspiration of the Second Advent hope (Titus 2:13), and (_c_) the Atonement on which so great redemption rests (Titus 2:14).
