1 Chronicles 29:1

_FURTHERMORE DAVID THE KING SAID UNTO ALL THE CONGREGATION, SOLOMON MY SON, WHOM ALONE GOD HATH CHOSEN, IS YET YOUNG AND TENDER, AND THE WORK IS GREAT: FOR THE PALACE IS NOT FOR MAN, BUT FOR THE LORD GOD._ Solomon ... is yet young and tender. His father made this address before Solomon was endowed with the divine gift of wisdom; and David's reference to his son's extreme youth, in connection with the great national undertaking he had been divinely appointed to execute, was to apologize to this assembly of the estates, or rather, to assign the reason of his elaborate preparations for the work....

1-9 What is done in works of piety and charity, should be done willingly, not by constraint; for God loves a cheerful giver. David set a good example. This David offered, not from constraint, or for show; but because he had set his affection to the house of God, and thought he could never do enough towards promoting that good work. Those who would draw others to good, must lead the way themselves....

CHAPTER XXIX _David enumerates the gifts which he designed for the building_ _of the temple; and exhorts the princes and people to make_ _their offerings_, 1-5. _They offer willingly, and to a great amount_, 6-9. _David's thanksgiving and prayer to God on the occasion_, 10-19. _The princes and people praise God, offer sacrifices and feasts_ _before him, make Solomon King, and do him homage_, 20-24. _The Lord magnifies Solomon_, 25. _Concluding account of David's reign, character, and death_, 26-30. THE PALACE - The original word here used is the Hebrew form of a Persian word, and generally designates the residence of the Persian monarch Esther 1:2, Esther 1:5; Esther 2:3, Esther 2:8; Nehemiah 1:1; Daniel 8:2. It is only here and in 1 Chronicles 29:19 that it is applied to the temple....

EXPOSITION 1 CHRONICLES 29:1 These verses continue the account of what David said to the whole congregation, respecting his son Solomon and his tender age in view of the great enterprise of building the temple; respecting the public preparations which had been already made, and the gifts of his own individual property—these latter being alluded to, no doubt, for the sake of example. On the faith of them he grounds with tenfold effect his appeal to people and princes to join heartily in the work. The verses (6-9)also contain the statement of the hearty practical response which was made by the "chiefs of the fathers and princes of the tribes," and other varieties of givers, and of the consequent general joy. 1 CHRONICLES 29:1

FURTHERMORE, DAVID THE KING SAID UNTO ALL THE CONGREGATION,.... Having finished what he had to say to Solomon, he addressed the congregation again: SOLOMON MY SON, WHOM ALONE GOD HATH CHOSEN; both to be king, and to build the temple IS YET YOUNG AND TENDER; see 1 Chronicles 22:5 AND THE WORK IS GREAT; both of governing so great a people, and of building so magnificent a temple, especially the latter is meant: FOR THE PALACE IS NOT FOR MAN; for any mortal king, though ever so great: BUT FOR THE LORD GOD; the Targum is, "but for the Word of the Lord God,'' who is the King of kings, and Lord of lords; and therefore is to be built as with the greatest exactness, according to the pattern he himself has given, so with the greatest splendour and magnificence....
