26-30 When we read the second book of Samuel, we could scarcely have expected to behold David appear so illustrious in his closing scene. But his repentance had been as remarkable as his sin; and his conduct during his afflictions, and towards the end of his life, appears to have had a good effect on his subjects. Blessed be God, even the chief of sinners may hope for a glorious departure, when brought to repent and flee for refuge to the Saviour's atoning blood. Let us mark the difference between the spirit and character of the man after God's own heart, living and dying, and those of worthless professors, who resemble him in nothing but their sins, and who wickedly try to excuse their crimes by his sins. Verse 1 Chronicles 29:30. _THE TIMES THAT WENT OVER HIM_] The transactions of his reign, and the occurrences and vicissitudes in his own kingdom, as well as those which were _over all the kingdoms of the countries_, i.e., in the surrounding nations, in most of which David had a share during his forty years' reign. Relative to the _character_ of David, see a few remarks in the note on 1 Kings 2:10; and see more at the end of the _Psalms_. THE TIMES THAT WENT OVER HIM - i. e., the events that happened to him. Compare Psalms 31:15. ALL THE KINGDOMS OF THE COUNTRIES - The kingdoms, i. e., of Moab, Ammon, Damascus, Zobah, etc. See the full phrase in 2 Chronicles 17:10. Some account of these kingdoms would necessarily have been given in any history of David’s reign....

EXPOSITION 1 CHRONICLES 29:1 These verses continue the account of what David said to the whole congregation, respecting his son Solomon and his tender age in view of the great enterprise of building the temple; respecting the public preparations which had been already made, and the gifts of his own individual property—these latter being alluded to, no doubt, for the sake of example. On the faith of them he grounds with tenfold effect his appeal to people and princes to join heartily in the work. The verses (6-9)also contain the statement of the hearty practical response which was made by the "chiefs of the fathers and princes of the tribes," and other varieties of givers, and of the consequent general joy. 1 CHRONICLES 29:1

AND THE TIMES THAT WENT OVER HIM— The _transactions_ are to be understood, which are usually denoted by _the times,_ and which shew what was the nature of the times; a mode of speaking which is common to almost all languages. _The kingdoms of the countries,_ is rendered by Houbigant and the LXX, _the kingdoms of the land; 1:_e. the kingdoms of the land of promise.
