JEHIAL, х_ Yª`IY'EEL_ (H3273). The Kethib has y-`-w-'-l, Jeuel; Septuagint, Vatican, Ieeel; Alexandrine, Ieieel]. Jehiel is supposed to be another name for Abiel (1 Samuel 9:1); although the letter ain in the former creates a difficulty. WHOSE WIFE'S NAME WAS MAACHAH, [Septuagint, Vatican, Mooocha]. Her husband's name and hers are recorded as being prominent ancestors in the genealogy of Saul....

Verse 35. _WHOSE WIFE'S NAME WAS MAACHAH_] Here our translators have departed from the original, for the word is אחתו _achotho_, his SISTER; but the _Vulgate, Septuagint, Syriac, Arabic_, and _Chaldee_, have WIFE; to which may be added 1 Chronicles 8:29, the parallel place. Almost all the early editions, as well as the MS. editions, have the same reading. Of all the _Polyglots_ the _Complutensian_ alone has אשתו _ishto_, his WIFE. _His wife_ is the reading also of Vatablus's Polyglot, but in the margin he observes that other copies have _his_ _sister_. There is most certainly a _fault_ somewhere, for _Maachah_ could not be both the _sister_ and _wife_ of _Jehiel_. Whether, therefore, 1 Chronicles 8:29 has been alte...

An almost exact repetition of 1 Chronicles 8:29; and probably intentionally made by the author. In order to connect the genealogical section of his work with the historical, he re-introduces the genealogy of the person with whose death his historical section opens....

The Hebrew verb (חִתְיַחְשׂי) is sufficiently satisfied by the rendering _were enrolled_,_ _or _were registered. _THE BOOK OF THE KINGS OF ISRAEL AND JUDAH. The book referred to is often styled "The book of the kings of Israel" (2 Chronicles 20:34; 2 Chronicles 33:18); and it is more probable that that is the intended title here, and that the words should follow thus: AND JUDAH WERE CARRIED CAPTIVE TO BABYLON BECAUSE OF THEIR TRANSGRESSIONS.
