25._Whatsoever is sold in the shambles _He has spoken above of dissembling in connection with idolatry, or, at least, as to those actions which the Corinthians could not engage in, without professing themselves to be the associates of the wicked in their superstitions. He now requires them, not merely to abstain from all professions of idolatry, but also to avoid carefully all occasions of offense, which are wont to arise from the indiscriminate use of things indifferent. 23-33 There were cases wherein Christians might eat what had been offered to idols, without sin. Such as when the flesh was sold in the market as common food, for the priest to whom it had been given. But a Christian must not merely consider what is lawful, but what is expedient, and to edify others. Christianity by no means forbids the common offices of kindness, or allows uncourteous behaviour to any, however they may differ from us in religious sentiments or practices. But this is not to be understood of religious festivals, partaking in idolatrous worship. Verse 25. _WHATSOEVER IS SOLD IN THE SHAMBLES_, THAT _EAT_] The case to which the apostle refers is simply this; it was customary to bring the flesh of the animal to market, the blood of which had been poured out in sacrifice to an idol; or, taken more _particularly_, the case was this; _one_ part of the sacrifice was _consumed_ on the altar of the idol: a _second_ part was _dressed_ and eaten by the _sacrificer_; and a _third_ belonged to the _priest_, and was often sold in the shambles.
