Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God: GIVE NONE OFFENCE - in things indifferent; for in essential things affecting doctrine and practice, even in the smallest detail, we must not swerve from principle, whatever offence result (; ; ; )....

32._Be not occasions of stumbling to any _This is the _second _point, which it becomes us to have an eye to — the rule of love. A desire, then, for the glory of God, holds the _first _place; a regard to our neighbor holds the _second _He makes mention of _Jews and Gentiles_, not merely because the Church of God consisted of those two classes, but to teach us that we are debtors to all, even to strangers, that we may, if possible, _gain _them. Such as when the flesh was sold in the market as common food, for the priest to whom it had been given. But a Christian must not merely consider what is lawful, but what is expedient, and to edify others. Christianity by no means forbids the common offices of kindness, or allows uncourteous behaviour to any, however they may differ from us in religious sentiments or practices. But this is not to be understood of religious festivals, partaking in idolatrous worship.
