EXPOSITION This chapter, from its second verse, finds its parallel in 1 Kings 22:2. It opens with dangerous symptoms, recording in one sentence the event that was to bear ill fruit, if not till "years" afterward (1 Kings 22:2), of Jehoshaphat "joining affinity with Ahab." His son Jehoram married Athaliah, daughter of Ahab and Jezebel (2 Chronicles 21:6). The further steps by which Jehoshaphat became entangled with Ahab are graphically described. He forms an alliance with him in the war with Ramoth-Gilead (1 Kings 22:1); be urges Ahab to consult "a prophet of the Lord" ...

PROPHESIED. — _Nibbĕ’îm,_ “were prophesying.” Vulg., “prophetabant.” In 2 Chronicles 18:9 the synonym _mith-nabbe’îm_ was used, which also signifies “mad, raving” Jeremiah 29:26). The root meaning of this word is probably visible in the Assyrian _nabû,_ “to call, proclaim,” so that the _nâbî,_ or prophet, was the προφήτης or spokesman of God, the herald of heaven to earth. (Comp. the name of the god Nebo, _Nabi’um,_ who answers in the Babylonian Pantheon to the Greek Hermes.) AND PROSPER — _i.e., and thou shalt prosper._ So LXX., καὶ εὐοδωθήσῃ. Vuig., “prosperaberis.” (Comp. “This do, and live;” and Genesis 20:7, “he shall pray for thee, _and live thou!_”)...
