2 Chronicles 18:30

EXPOSITION This chapter, from its second verse, finds its parallel in 1 Kings 22:2. It opens with dangerous symptoms, recording in one sentence the event that was to bear ill fruit, if not till "years" afterward (1 Kings 22:2), of Jehoshaphat "joining affinity with Ahab." His son Jehoram married Athaliah, daughter of Ahab and Jezebel (2 Chronicles 21:6). The further steps by which Jehoshaphat became entangled with Ahab are graphically described. He forms an alliance with him in the war with Ramoth-Gilead (1 Kings 22:1); be urges Ahab to consult "a prophet of the Lord" ...

NOW, &C. Having been taken into the camp of Israel and allowed to hear what Ahab said, we are now taken into the camp of Syria to overhear what the king of Syria said. This is to enable us to understand what follows....

_the captains of the chariots that_were _with him_ R.V. THE CAPTAINS OF HIS CHARIOTS. _Thirty-two_in number (1 Kin.). While the rest of the Syrian army met the Israelite attack, the chariots were to act as an independent force, whose primary task should be to kill or capture Ahab. The king of Syria felt himself overmatched and thought that the only chance of victory lay in the fall of the Israelite commander. Cp. 2 Kings 3:26 (the king of Moab tries to break through to the king off Edom). _Fight ye not with small or great_ R.V. FIGHT NEITHER WITH SMALL NOR GREAT (so in 1 Kin.)....

THAT WERE WITH HIM. — Kings adds, “thirty and two,” referring to what is related in 1 Kings 20:16; 1 Kings 20:24, a matter which the chronicler has not noticed. The Syriac and Arabic supply the number here. WITH SMALL OR GREAT. — So Kings. Our text is literally, _with_ the _small or_ the _great._ THEY COMPASSED ABOUT HIM. — Or, _came round against him._ Kings, wrongly, “_turned aside_ against him.” In Hebrew the difference turns on half a letter.
