Verse 2 Chronicles 18:33. A CERTAIN _MAN DREW A BOW_] The _Targum_ tells us _who_ it was. "Now, Naaman, the captain of the host of the great king of Syria, drew a bow against him, (that the prophecy of Elijah the Tishbite, and of Micaiah the son of Imla, might be fulfilled,) and smote the king of Israel between the heart and the caul of the liver, through the place where the coat of mail is joined." 2 Kings 5:1 for this tradition....

EXPOSITION This chapter, from its second verse, finds its parallel in 1 Kings 22:2. It opens with dangerous symptoms, recording in one sentence the event that was to bear ill fruit, if not till "years" afterward (1 Kings 22:2), of Jehoshaphat "joining affinity with Ahab." His son Jehoram married Athaliah, daughter of Ahab and Jezebel (2 Chronicles 21:6). The further steps by which Jehoshaphat became entangled with Ahab are graphically described. He forms an alliance with him in the war with Ramoth-Gilead (1 Kings 22:1); be urges Ahab to consult "a prophet of the Lord" ...

God had already brought about that which the Syrians were labouring to perform. _at a venture_ Better, as mg., IN HIS SIMPLICITY, i.e. without knowing that he was aiming at Ahab. Cp. 2 Samuel 15:11. _between the joints of the harness_ Probably between the breastplate (or coat of mail) and the appendages to it; the wound would be in the lower part of the body. _that thou mayest carry me_ R.V.
