AND THE LORD HELPED HIM ... - There is nothing correspondent to this passage in Kings. It is a pious reflection on the part of the author, who traces all deliverance to its real divine source....

EXPOSITION This chapter, from its second verse, finds its parallel in 1 Kings 22:2. It opens with dangerous symptoms, recording in one sentence the event that was to bear ill fruit, if not till "years" afterward (1 Kings 22:2), of Jehoshaphat "joining affinity with Ahab." His son Jehoram married Athaliah, daughter of Ahab and Jezebel (2 Chronicles 21:6). The further steps by which Jehoshaphat became entangled with Ahab are graphically described. He forms an alliance with him in the war with Ramoth-Gilead (1 Kings 22:1); be urges Ahab to consult "a prophet of the Lord" ...

THE LORD. Hebrew. _Jehovah._ App-4. HELPED HIM: i.e. Jehoshaphat, for Jehovah was his Covenant God. GOD MOVED THEM. Hebrew. _Elohim._ App-4. He stood, to the Syrians, only in the relation of the Creator to His creatures....

_saw Jehoshaphat … to fight_ Render, SAW JEHOSHAPHAT, (NOW THEY SAID, IT IS THE KING OF ISRAEL!) THAT THEY TURNED ABOUT AGAINST HIM TO FIGHT. The captains of the chariots obeying the orders given them made a circuit in order to reach the rear of the Israelite army where Jehoshaphat was stationed. The same fact is described in 1 Kin. by the phrase, _they turned aside_. The A.V. of Chronicles _they compassed about him_(i.e. "surrounded him"; cp. 2 Chronicles 21:9) is a possible, but less probable, interpretation. _and God moved them_to depart _from him_ These words anticipate 2 Chronicles 18:32 and are not found in 1 Kin.
