_AND THE INHABITANTS OF JERUSALEM MADE AHAZIAH HIS YOUNGEST SON KING IN HIS STEAD: FOR THE BAND OF MEN THAT CAME WITH THE ARABIANS TO THE CAMP HAD SLAIN ALL THE ELDEST. All his older brothers having been slaughtered by the Arab marauders, the throne of Judah rightfully belonged to him, as the only legitimate heir of Joram....

EXPOSITION This chapter comprises the accession, brief reign, and death of Ahaziah (2 Chronicles 22:1) and the following murders and usurpation of Athaliah during six years (2 Chronicles 22:10). The parallel of the former section is to be found in 2 Kings 8:24-12; 2Ki 9:14-16, 2 Kings 9:21-12; and of the latter, 2 Kings 11:1. 2 CHRONICLES 22:1 This verse does not so much purport

He being the only surviving one of the sons of Jehoram, the same with Jehoahaz, 2 Chronicles 21:17 who was saved when the rest were taken captive and slain, by his mother Athaliah, and he made his escape, and that she also escaped is clear from 2 Chronicles 22:10 FOR THE BAND OF MEN THAT CAME WITH THE ARABIANS TO THE CAMP; that is, of the Philistines, 2 Chronicles 21:16, which band seems to be a band or company of thieves and robbers, as the Septuagint, cruel and barbarous, as the action ascribed to them shows: [FOR THEY] HAD SLAIN ALL THE ELDEST; son

THE REIGN OF AHAZIAH. Taken, in part, from 2 Kings 8:24, the notes on which see. 2 Chronicles 22:2. forty and two: this should be twenty and two (see 1 Kings 8:26). 2 Chronicles 22:7. The contradiction between this account and that of 2 Kings 9:27 ff. is sufficiently striking to suggest that the Chronicler utilised an entirely different source; it is not improbable that more than one account of the occurrence existed, and that the Chronicler, for some reason of his own, followed the one different from that in

2 Chronicles 22:1-4 (2 Kings 8:25-27).
