_AND HE WAS WITH THEM HID IN THE HOUSE OF GOD SIX YEARS: AND ATHALIAH REIGNED OVER THE LAND._ He was with them hid in the house of God. Certain persons connected with the priesthood had a right to occupy the buildings in the outer wall, and all within the outer wall was often called the temple. Jehoiada and his family resided in one of these apartments....

Verse 2 Chronicles 22:12. _HID IN THE HOUSE OF GOD_] "In the house of the sanctuary of God." - _Targum_. Or, as he says on 2 Chronicles 22:11, בקודש קודשיא bekudash kudeshaiya "in the holy of holies." To this place Athaliah had no access, therefore Joash lay concealed, he and his affectionate aunt-nurse. - See on 2 Kings 11:1....

EXPOSITION This chapter comprises the accession, brief reign, and death of Ahaziah (2 Chronicles 22:1) and the following murders and usurpation of Athaliah during six years (2 Chronicles 22:10). THE REIGN OF AHAZIAH. Taken, in part, from 2 Kings 8:24, the notes on which see. 2 Chronicles 22:2. forty and two: this should be twenty and two (see 1 Kings 8:26). 2 Chronicles 22:7. The contradiction between this account and that of 2 Kings 9:27 ff. is sufficiently striking to suggest that the Chronicler utilised an entirely different source; it is not improbable that more than one account of the occurrence existed, and that the Chronicler, for some reason of his own, followed the one different from that in

_with them_ i.e. with Jehoiada and Jehoshabeath. In Kings "with her." _in the house of God_ "The chamber for beds" (in the palace?) was only a temporary hiding-place....

8. THE TIMES OF ATHALIAH (2 Chronicles 22:10 to 2 Chronicles 23:15) TEXT 2 Chronicles 22:10. Now when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the seed royal of the house of Judah. 11. But Jehoshabeath, the daughter of the king, took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him away from among the king's sons that were slain, and put him and his nurse in the bedchamber. So Jehqshabeath, the daughter of king Jehoram, the wife of Jehoiada the priest (for she was the sister of Ahaziah), hid him from Athaliah so that she slew him not. 12. And he was with them hid in the house of God six years: and Athaliah reigned over the land....
