The God of this people of Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with an high arm brought he them out of it. THE GOD OF THIS PEOPLE OF ISRAEL CHOSE OUR FATHERS, AND EXALTED THE PEOPLE WHEN THEY DWELT AS STRANGERS IN THE LAND OF EGYPT - by marvelous interpositions in their behalf, when in their deepest depressions. AND WITH AN HIGH ARM (BY A SIGNAL EXERCISE OF HIS POWER), BROUGHT HE THEM OUT OF IT....

17._The God of this people. _This preface did witness that Paul did go about no new thing, which might lead away the people from the law of Moses. There is but one God, who is God of all nations; but he calleth him God of that people, to whom he had bound himself, and who was worshipped amongst the posterity of Abraham, amongst whom alone true and pure religion was to be found. To the same end tendeth that which is added immediately, _He chose our fathers. _For he testifieth by these words that he seeketh nothing less (799) than that they may fall away from the true and living God, who hath separated them from the residue of the world. 14-31 When we come together to worship God, we must do it, not only by prayer and praise, but by the reading and hearing of the word of God. The bare reading of the Scriptures in public assemblies is not enough; they should be expounded, and the people exhorted out of them. This is helping people in doing that which is necessary to make the word profitable, to apply it to themselves. Every thing is touched upon in this sermon, which might best prevail with Jews to receive and embrace Christ as the promised Messiah. And every view, however short or faint, of the Lord's dealings with his church, reminds us of his mercy and long-suffering, and of man's ingratitude and perverseness. Paul passes from David to the Son of David, and shows that this Jesus is his promised Seed; a Saviour to do that for them, which the judges of old could not do, to save them from their sins, their worst enemies....

Verse Acts 13:17. _THE GOD OF - OUR FATHERS_] The apostle begins his discourse with the Egyptian bondage, and their deliverance from it, as points the most remarkable and striking in their history; in which the providence and mighty power of God, exerted so frequently in their behalf, were peculiarly conspicuous. _EXALTED THE PEOPLE_] Even when they were strangers in the land, and greatly oppressed, God exalted them; made them a terror to their enemies, and multiplied them greatly. _WITH A HIGH ARM_] A literal translation of the Hebrew phrase, בזרוע רמה _bezeroa ramah_, with a lifted-up arm, to protect them and destroy their enemies. The meaning of the phrase is, _a manifest_ _display of the Divine power_....

THE GOD OF THIS PEOPLE - Who has manifested himself as the special friend and protector of this nation. This implied a belief that he had been particularly their God; a favorite doctrine of the Jews, and one that would conciliate their favor toward Paul. OF ISRAEL - The Jews. CHOSE OUR FATHERS - Selected the nation to be a chosen and special people to himself, Deuteronomy 7:6. AND EXALTED THE PEOPLE - Raised them up from a low and depressed state of bondage, to freedom, and to special privileges as a nation. WHEN THEY DWELT AS STRANGERS IN THE LAND OF EGYPT - ἐν τῇ παροικίᾳ en tē paroikia. This properly refers to their dwell
