34._That he should not return. _He addeth now the other member, that Christ was once raised from death that he may live for ever, as Paul teacheth, Romans 6:10, “He dieth no more, neither shall death have dominion over him any more; because he liveth to God.” For the hope conceived of Christ’s resurrection should be slender and cold, if he were yet subject to destruction, or to any change. Therefore he is said to be entered into the kingdom of God, that he may also give to his [people] eternal felicity, living for ever. For because Christ rose rather for our sake than for himself, the perpetuity of life which the Father hath given him reacheth unto us all, and is ours. 32-37 The resurrection of Christ was the great proof of his being the Son of God. It was not possible he should be held by death, because he was the Son of God, and therefore had life in himself, which he could not lay down but with a design to take it again. The sure mercies of David are that everlasting life, of which the resurrection was a sure pledge; and the blessings of redemption in Christ are a certain earnest, even in this world. Verse 34. _NO MORE TO RETURN TO CORRUPTION_] To the _grave_, to _death_, the _place_ and _state_ of _corruption_; for so we should understand the word διαφθοραν in the text. _THE SURE MERCIES OF DAVID._] τα οσια δαβιδ τα πιστα. These words are quoted literatim from the _Septuagint version_ of Isaiah 55:3; where the Hebrew is חסדי דוד הנאמנים _chasdey David ha-neemanim_, of which the Greek is a faithful translation; and which _sure mercies_ _of David_ St. Paul considers as being fulfilled in the _resurrection_ _of Christ_. From this application of the words, it is evident that the apostle considered the word _David_ as signifying the _Messiah_; and then the _sure_ or _faithful mercies_, being such as relate to the new covenant, and the various blessings promised in it, are evidently thos

AND AS CONCERNING - In further proof of this. To show that he actually did it, he proceeds to quote another passage of Scripture. NO MORE TO RETURN TO CORRUPTION - The word “corruption” is usually employed to denote “putrefaction, or the mouldering away of a body in the grave; its returning to its native dust.” But it is certain (Acts 13:35. See the notes on Acts 2:27) that the body of Christ never in this sense saw corruption. The word is therefore used to denote “death, or the grave, the cause and place of corruption.” The word is thus used in the Septuagint. It means here simply that he should not die again.
