Acts 13:26

Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent. MEN AND BRETHREN, CHILDREN OF THE STOCK OF ABRAHAM, AND WHOSOEVER AMONG YOU FEARETH GOD - both Israelites and proselytes to the Israelite Faith (see the note at Acts 13:16). TO YOU (OF BOTH CLASSES), IS THE WORD OF THIS SALVATION SENT - or, 'sent forth' [the compound exapestalee (G1821) is manifestly the true reading]....

26._Men and brethren. _Paul doth again prick forward the Jews to embrace Christ; for this ought to have raised no small study and attentiveness in their minds, when as they saw [heard] their salvation handled, and that the message of salvation was appointed properly for them. He calleth them _children of Abraham _not only for honor’s sake, but that they may know that they be heirs of eternal life; and he speaketh them so fair that it might not grieve them to depart from the scribes and priests whom they worshipped, because they must needs receive Christ. Furthermore, we must remember that which I said before, though the gate of the kingdom of heaven were set open to the Gentiles, yet were not the Jews thrown down from their estate; but were counted the first-begotten in God’s family; therefore is it that he saith, that salvation was sent to them, because they were first in order; yet bec...

14-31 When we come together to worship God, we must do it, not only by prayer and praise, but by the reading and hearing of the word of God. The bare reading of the Scriptures in public assemblies is not enough; they should be expounded, and the people exhorted out of them. This is helping people in doing that which is necessary to make the word profitable, to apply it to themselves. Every thing is touched upon in this sermon, which might best prevail with Jews to receive and embrace Christ as the promised Messiah. And every view, however short or faint, of the Lord's dealings with his church, reminds us of his mercy and long-suffering, and of man's ingratitude and perverseness. Paul passes from David to the Son of David, and shows that this Jesus is his promised Seed; a Saviour to do that for them, which the judges of old could not do, to save them from their sins, their worst enemies....

Verse Acts 13:26. _MEN_ AND _BRETHREN_] This should have been translated brethren simply. Acts 7:2. _CHILDREN OF THE STOCK OF ABRAHAM_] All ye that are _Jews_. _AND WHOSOEVER AMONG YOU FEARED GOD_] That is, all ye who are _Gentiles_, and are now _proselytes_ to the Jewish religion. _THE WORD OF THIS SALVATION_] The _doctrine_ that contains the promise of _deliverance from sin_, and the means by which it is brought about; all which is founded on Jesus, of the stock of David, dying and rising again for the salvation of _Jews_ and Gentiles....

MEN AND BRETHREN - Paul now exhorts them to embrace the Lord Jesus as the Messiah. He uses, therefore, the most respectful and fraternal language. CHILDREN OF THE STOCK OF ABRAHAM - Descendants of Abraham; you who regard Abraham as your ancestor. He means here to address particularly the native-born Jews; and this appellation is used because they valued themselves highly on account of their descent from Abraham (see the notes on Matthew 3:9); and because the promise of the Messiah had been specially given to him. ACTS 13:26 h`mi/n {B} The interchange of u` for h` (both were pronounced ¢¢), and vice versa, was a common blunder among Greek scribes (for example, earlier in the verse A D 81 read evn h`mi/n instead of the obviously correct evn u`mi/n). In the present case the context as well as a combination of Alexandrian and Western witnesses strongly support the first person pronoun....
