LUKE—NOTE ON Luke 22:42 On Father, see note on Matt. 6:9. this cup. A symbol of Jesus’ future suffering (see Matthew 20:22; Mark 10:38). Taking the cup shows that Jesus took God’s wrath upon himself (see Isaiah 51:17, Isaiah 51:22; Jeremiah 25:15; Ezekiel 23:31; Habakkuk 2:16). Jesus died for the sake of and instead of his people (see notes on Mark 14:36; John 18:11; Romans 3:25; 1 John 2:2). Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done. Jesus intentionally, voluntarily, and obediently “endured the cross, despising the shame” (Hebrews 12:2).
