Deuteronomy 4:12._And the Lord spake unto you. _It is a confirmation of the Second Commandment, that God manifested Himself to the Israelites by a voice, and not in a bodily form; whence it follows that those who are not contented with His voice, but seek His visible form, substitute imaginations and phantoms in His place. But here arises a difficult question, for God made Himself known to the patriarchs in other ways besides by His voice alone; thus Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob knew Him not only by hearing, but by sight. Moses himself saw Him in the midst of the burning bush; and He also manifested Himself to the Prophets under visible figures. Hero worship exhibited itself in the practice of setting up images of human form as household gods (Penates, compare Genesis 31:19; Genesis 35:2), or as local and civic divinities: a practice forbidden by Deuteronomy 4:16. For the Lord descended on Mount Sinai in a cloud, in fire, and was in the thick darkness, from whence he delivered out the ten commands: YE HEARD THE VOICE OF THE WORDS; distinctly and plainly, not only the sound of them, but the words themselves, and so as to understand what was meant by them; BUT SAW NO SIMILITUDE; not any likeness of the person speaking, by which they could form any idea of him in their minds, which was purposely done to prevent idolatry: ONLY YE HEARD A VOICE; that was all....

SECOND PART OF MOSES-' FIRST ADDRESS. This contains exhortations to obedience from motives of self-interest and of gratitude to Yahweh, and forms an apparent logical unity with Deuteronomy 1:6 to Deuteronomy 3:29: but the two pieces had probably a separate origin. The lessons in Deuteronomy 4:1 are not drawn immediately from chs. 1- 3. Figure of speech _Zeugma._ App-6.: by which one verb 'saw" is used with two objects and suits only the first.. second verb "heard" must be supplied: compare Exodus 3:16. 2Ki 11:12. 1 Timothy 4:3. It is for the purpose of calling attention to the emphasis thus put on the verb "saw"; an idol being that which is _seen_. SIMILITUDE. appearance of form, or likeness....

Against Idolatry The truth that is beneath the whole Law: God is revealed not in images, but by words and deeds of redemption. Warned to lay their experience to heart (Deuteronomy 4:9), Israel are reminded of the revelation at Ḥoreb, solely by words and the covenant (Deuteronomy 4:10-14); let them recall they saw no form (Deuteronomy 4:15) lest they make any idol of any living thing in earth, air or sea (Deuteronomy 4:16-18) or worship the host of heaven, assigned by Jehovah to other peoples (Deuteronomy 4:19)
