24-40 Moses urged the greatness, glory, and goodness of God. Did we consider what a God he is with whom we have to do, we should surely make conscience of our duty to him, and not dare to sin against him. Shall we forsake a merciful God, who will never forsake us, if we are faithful unto him? Whither can we go? Unwilling, as it might seem, to close his discourse with words of terror, Moses makes a last appeal to them in these verses in a different strain. EXPOSITION DEUTERONOMY 4:25-5 Moses enforces the warning against idolatry, by predicting the evil that should come upon the nation through the apostasy of those who should in after times turn from Jehovah to strange gods. In Christ, in whom he has proclaimed his name as such, of which Moses had a comfortable view, Exodus 34:6 and therefore could attest it from his own knowledge and experience: HE WILL NOT FORSAKE THEE; though in a strange country, but bring them from thence into their own land again, and favour them with his gracious presence in his house and ordinances: NEITHER DESTROY THEE; from being a people; and in a very wonderful manner are they preserved among the nations of the earth to this day: NOR FORGET THE COVENANT OF THY FATHERS, WHICH HE SWARE UNTO THEM; that a Saviour should come and turn away ungodliness from them, and take away their sins; see Romans 11:26....
