_AND THOU SHALT MAKE CURTAINS OF GOATS' HAIR TO BE A COVERING UPON THE TABERNACLE: ELEVEN CURTAINS SHALT THOU MAKE._ Thou shalt make curtains of goat's hair. This after being spun (Exodus 35:26) was woven into a coarse kind of stuff resembling camlet, and used in the East as a material of common tents. It differed somewhat from the former in dimensions, no less than in general quality and appearance. There were to be eleven pieces of this coarse cloth made, each 30 cubits long and 4 cubits broad, which were to be formed into two large curtains-one of five and the other of six parts; and these, when united by loops and taches of brass, were to be placed over the splendid curtain of the tabernacle, being so disposed that, as they were one more in number than the former, and, moreover, were 30 cubits long, while the linen curtains under them were only 28, the hair-cloth coveri

EXPOSITION EXODUS 26:1 THE TABERNACLE. The sacred furniture which the tabernacle was to contain having been described, with the exception of the "altar of incense" the description of which is reserved for Exodus 30:1. (Exodus 30:1)-directions were next given for the sacred structure itself. This was to consist of three main things— 1. A quadrangular enclosure thirty cubits long by ten broad, open at one end, and on the other three sides enclosed by boards of acacia-wood overlaid with gold—called the _mishkan_, or "the dwelling-place," in our version usually translated "tabernacle." 2....

AND A CUBIT ON THE ONE SIDE, AND A CUBIT ON THE OTHER SIDE O THAT WHICH REMAINETH IN THE LENGTH OF THE CURTAINS OF THE TENT,.... The curtains of the tent, or the goat hair curtains, were two cubits longer than the other, and these are the two cubits, one on one side and the other on the other, which remained, and by which they were longer than the linen curtains: IT SHALL HANG OVER THE SIDES OF THE TABERNACLE; the north and south sides: on this side, AND ON THAT SIDE, TO COVER IT; and as the above learned doctor observes o, their length of fifteen yards reached half a yard lower on either side than the other curtains did, and yet they came not to the ground by a quarter of a yard; so that the silver foundations (of which afterwards) were always plain to be seen everywhere but at the west end. o Works, vol. 1. p. 719....

EXODUS 7-13 (cf. Exodus 36:14-18). The _Tent_over the Dwelling, consisting of eleven curtains of cloth made of goats" hair, each 30 cubits long, and 4 cubits wide, fastened together so as to form a single large curtain, 30 cubits broad, and 44 cubits long. The Bedawin still make their tents of goats" hair in the same way: breadths of goats" hair cloth, it may be ¾ yd. broad, and as long as the breadth of the tent, are stitched together, and form a covering capable of keeping out the heaviest rain (Burckh. _Bedouins_, i. 37; cf. _DB._iv. 717): comp.
