_AND THOU SHALT MAKE CURTAINS OF GOATS' HAIR TO BE A COVERING UPON THE TABERNACLE: ELEVEN CURTAINS SHALT THOU MAKE._ Thou shalt make curtains of goat's hair. This after being spun (Exodus 35:26) was woven into a coarse kind of stuff resembling camlet, and used in the East as a material of common tents. It differed somewhat from the former in dimensions, no less than in general quality and appearance. There were to be eleven pieces of this coarse cloth made, each 30 cubits long and 4 cubits broad, which were to be formed into two large curtains-one of five and the other of six parts; and these, when united by loops and taches of brass, were to be placed over the splendid curtain of the tabernacle, being so disposed that, as they were one more in number than the former, and, moreover, were 30 cubits long, while the linen curtains under them were only 28, the hair-cloth coveri

7-14 The curtains of meaner materials, being made both longer and broader, covered the others, and were defended by coverings of skins. The whole represents the person and doctrine of Christ, and the church of true Christians, and all heavenly things, which outwardly are mean, but inwardly, and in the sight of God, are glorious and precious....

Verse Exodus 26:14. _RAMS' SKINS DYED RED_] Exodus 25:5, Exodus 25:5. This was the third covering; and what is called the badgers' skins was the fourth. Exodus 25:5, Exodus 25:5. Why there should have been _four_ coverings does not appear. They might have been designed partly for respect; and partly to keep off dust and dirt, and the extremely fine sand which in that desert rises as it were on every breeze; and partly to keep off the intense _heat_ of the sun, which would otherwise have destroyed...

EXPOSITION EXODUS 26:1 THE TABERNACLE. The sacred furniture which the tabernacle was to contain having been described, with the exception of the "altar of incense" the description of which is reserved for Exodus 30:1. (Exodus 30:1)-directions were next given for the sacred structure itself. This was to consist of three main things— 1. A quadrangular enclosure thirty cubits long by ten broad, open at one end, and on the other three sides enclosed by boards of acacia-wood overlaid with gold—called the _mishkan_, or "the dwelling-place," in our version usually translated "tabernacle." 2....

AND THOU SHALT MAKE A COVERING FOR THE TENT OF RAMS' SKINS DYED RED,.... This was a covering that was put over the curtains of goats' skin; but whether it went all over them, or only upon the roof of the tabernacle they covered, to keep out the rains from soaking through, is not certain, nor very evident; Jarchi thinks the roof was only covered with this covering of rams' skins; but others think it more reasonable that the whole was covered with them to preserve from dust and rain: AND A COVERING ABOVE OF BADGERS' SKINS; of these skins Exodus 25:5, this was a fourth covering of the tabernacle; the first was of linen curtains, the second of goats' hair, the third of rams' skins, and the fourth of badgers' skins, which seems to have been thicker and courser, since shoes were made of them,...

This chapter deals with the tent, or tabernacle proper, describing in succession the four thicknesses of different materials which were to make its covering (Exodus 26:1. _cf._ Exodus 36:8); the framework that should support them (Exodus 26:15; cf. Exodus 36:20); the inner partition or veil (Exodus 26:31; cf. Exodus 36:35 f.) and the contents of the interior ...

(cf. Exodus 36:19). Two outer coverings of stronger and stouter materials, to be laid over the Tent, for protection against rain. Kn. reminds us that on military expeditions the Romans used in winter to cover their tents with skins (_sub pellibus hiemare_). _rams" skins dyed red_ i.e. leather, dyed, not with the costly Phoenician -scarlet" (Exodus 25:4), but probably (Kennedy), as LXX. ἠρυθροδανωμένα suggests, with _madder_(ἐρυθρόδανον). _sealskins_ DUGONG _skins_(Exodus 25:5). THOU SHALT MAKE A COVERING—OF RAMS' SKINS, &C.— The third covering, of a still coarser kind, was to be made of _rams' skins dyed red;_ over which, as a fourth _covering,_ and a perfect security from the weather, skins of a _purple colour_ were to be thrown: see what has been said respecting the word rendered _badgers' skins,_ on ch. Exodus 25:5. Perhaps this might be intended to describe one covering only, which went over the whole; for the verse might be rendered, _And thou shalt make a covering for the tent, of rams' skins dyed red, and of purple skins, even a covering for the whole. Note;_ 1. A coarse garment covers often a precious soul. 2. A true christian is best within, whilst a hypocrite seeks only outward show. 3. They who take refuge in God's true sanctuary, Jesus Christ, have a safe and glorious covert from all the storms of wrath and the tempests of sin.
