_AND THOU SHALT MAKE BOARDS FOR THE TABERNACLE OF SHITTIM WOOD STANDING UP._ Boards ... of shittim wood standing up. These boards, made of acacia wood (see the note at Exodus 25:15), covered with gold, were to be formed each ten cubits in length, and a cubit and a half in breadth [Nothing is said as to thickness, which Lightfoot ('Gleanings from Exodus') declares, on the authority of rabbinical tradition, to have been nine inches.] Neither the acacia Seyal nor the acacia Nilotica could have furnished single planks for boards of the prescribed dimensions, though, as has been suggested, the acacia Serissa of Cairo might have done so, supposing it to have formerly grown in the desert of Sinai. 15-30 The sockets of silver each weighed about 115 pounds; they were placed in rows on the ground. In every pair of these sockets, a strong board of shittim-wood, covered with plates of gold, was fitted by mortises and tenons. Thus walls were formed for the two sides, and for the west end. The wall was further held together by bars, which passed through rings of gold. Over this the curtains were spread. Though movable, it was strong and firm. The materials were very costly. In all this it was a type of the church of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief Corner-stone, Ephesians 2:20; Ephesians 2:21....

Verse Exodus 26:29. _THOU SHALT OVERLAY THE BOARDS WITH GOLD_] It is not said how thick the gold was by which these boards, c., were overlaid it was no doubt done with _gold plates_, but these must have been very _thin_, else the boards, c., must have been insupportably heavy. The gold was probably something like our _gold leaf_, but not brought to so great a degree of tenuity....

EXPOSITION EXODUS 26:1 THE TABERNACLE. The sacred furniture which the tabernacle was to contain having been described, with the exception of the "altar of incense" the description of which is reserved for Exodus 30:1. (Exodus 30:1)-directions were next given for the sacred structure itself. This was to consist of three main things— 1. A quadrangular enclosure thirty cubits long by ten broad, open at one end, and on the other three sides enclosed by boards of acacia-wood overlaid with gold—called the _mishkan_, or "the dwelling-place," in our version usually translated "tabernacle." 2....

AND THOU SHALT OVERLAY THE BOARDS WITH GOLD,.... Not merely gild them, but cover them with thin plates of gold; and which, because it would take up a great quantity of gold, and make the boards very heavy, unless the plates were very thin, when they were taken down and carried from place to place, some have thought they were only glided: AND MAKE THEIR RINGS OF GOLD, [FOR] PLACES FOR THE BARS; these were made of solid gold, and were as staples to let the bars into: and, according to Jarchi, there were two rings to every board: AND THOU SHALT OVERLAY THE BARS WITH GOLD: cover them with plates of gold; and these bars and staples of gold show how compact and firm the church of God is, through his almighty power, as well as how glorious and splendid it is by his grace....

The _bars_. Five gilt bars of acacia wood, attached to the frames by gold rings, are to run horizontally along the two sides and the back of the Dwelling, to keep the frames in their places. The middle bar in each case ran from end to end: the other bars, it may be inferred, were shorter, perhaps arranged as is here shewn: It is not stated whether the bars were to be outside or inside the Dwelling: but the former seems the more natural, and is commonly assumed....
