1-5 Hitherto the heads of families were the priests, and offered sacrifices; but now this office was confined to the family of Aaron only; and so continued till the gospel dispensation. The holy garments not only distinguished the priests from the people, but were emblems of that holy conduct which should ever be the glory and beauty, the mark of the ministers of religion, without which their persons and ministrations will be had in contempt. They also typified the glory of the Divine majesty, and the beauty of complete holiness, which rendered Jesus Christ the great High Priest. But our adorning under the gospel, is not to be of gold and costly array, but the garments of salvation, the robe of righteousness....

Verse Exodus 28:3. _WHOM I HAVE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT OF WISDOM_] So we find that _ingenuity_ in arts and sciences, even those of the _ornamental_ kind, comes from God. It is not intimated here that these persons were filled with the spirit of wisdom for _this_ _purpose only_; for the direction to Moses is, to select those whom he found to be _expert artists_, and those who were such, God shows by these words, had derived their knowledge from himself. Every man should be permitted as far as possible to follow the _bent_ or _direction_ of his own genius, when it evidently leads him to _new_ _inventions_, and _improvements on old plans_. How much has both the labour of men and cattle been lessened by improvements in machinery! And can we say that the _wisdom_ which found out these improvements did not come from God? No man, by cours...

Moses is now commanded to commit all that pertains to the offerings made to the Lord in the sanctuary to the exclusive charge of the members of a single family, who were to hold their office from generation to generation. In the patriarchal times, the external rites of worship had generally been conducted by the head of the tribe or family, in accordance with the principle involved in the dedication of the firstborn Exodus 13:2; Numbers 3:12. Moses, as the divinely-appointed and acknowledged leader of the nation, had, on a special occasion, appointed those who were to offer sacrifice, and had himself sprinkled the consecrating blood of the victims on the people...

EXPOSITION THE HOLY GARMENTS. The special object of the present chapter is to prescribe the form, materials, colour, etc; of the holy garments—or the attire of those who were to minister in the tabernacle at the time of their ministration. As the service of the tabernacle was about to be committed to Aaron and his sons, their selection for this office is mentioned in Exodus 28:1, and their investiture and consecration briefly touched in Exodus 28:41. AND THOU SHALL SPEAK UNTO ALL THAT ARE WISE HEARTED,.... That have knowledge and understanding in mechanic arts, particularly in making garments; and it required men of more than ordinary skill to be employed in making these, because they were uncommon ones, and required a good deal of thought and judgment, and care and application, to make them exactly as they should be: WHOM I HAVE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT OF WISDOM; for besides a common understanding of things, these required a peculiar gift from God, which some men, as Bezaleel and Aholiab had: THAT THEY MAY MAKE AARON'S GARMENTS, TO CONSECRATE HIM to put upon him at the time of his consecration; and indeed this was one way, by which, as well as by sacrifices, that he was consecrated, see Exodus 29:1, THAT HE MAY MINISTER UNTO ME IN THE PRIEST'S OFFICE for the priests, without having

CONSECRATE Hebrew, "Qodesh", means "set apart" for God. Translated, "holy," (Exodus 28:2); "consecrate," (Exodus 28:3). Often translated, "sanctify." See summary, (_ See Scofield) - (Zechariah 8:3). _ This is always the fundamental idea of a holy, consecrated, separated, or sanctified person or thing -- something set apart for God. Infinite confusion would have been spared the reader if "qodesh" had been uniformly translated, "set apart....

Here we find, no doubt, a simple assumption that Aaron and his sons wore the same vestments as were worn by the Zadokite High Priest and his assistants in the Temple of Zerub- babel.
