Exodus 28:32

_AND THERE SHALL BE AN HOLE IN THE TOP OF IT, IN THE MIDST THEREOF: IT SHALL HAVE A BINDING OF WOVEN WORK ROUND ABOUT THE HOLE OF IT, AS IT WERE THE HOLE OF AN HABERGEON, THAT IT BE NOT RENT._ No JFB commentary on these verses....

31-39 The robe of the ephod was under the ephod, and reached down to the knees, without sleeves. Aaron must minister in the garments appointed. We must serve the Lord with holy fear, as those who know they deserve to die. A golden plate was fixed on Aaron's forehead, engraven with "Holiness to the Lord." Aaron was hereby reminded that God is holy, and that his priests must be holy, devoted to the Lord. This must appear in their forehead, in open profession of their relation to God. It must be engraven like the engravings of a signet; deep and durable; not painted so as to be washed off, but firm and lasting; such must our holiness to the Lord be. Christ is our High Priest; through him sins are forgiven to us, and not laid to our charge. Our persons, our doings, are pleasing to God upon the account of Christ, and not otherwise....

(Compare Exodus 39:1.) Moses is now commanded to commit all that pertains to the offerings made to the Lord in the sanctuary to the exclusive charge of the members of a single family, who were to hold their office from generation to generation. In the patriarchal times, the external rites of worship had generally been conducted by the head of the tribe or family, in accordance with the principle involved in the dedication of the firstborn Exodus 13:2; Numbers 3:12. Moses, as the divinely-appointed and acknowledged leader of the nation, had, on a special occasion, appointed those who were to offer sacrifice, and had himself sprinkled the consecrating blood of the victims on the people...

EXPOSITION THE ROBE OF THE EPHOD. Underneath the ephod and breast-plate the high priest was to wear a robe, or frock, wholly of blue. This robe was to have a hole for the head at the top, and was to be woven without seam (Exodus 39:22). It was put on over the head, like a habergeon or coat of mail, and probably reached below the knee. Josephus says that it had no sleeves. EXODUS 28:31 ALL OF BLUE. This plainness and uniformity offered a strong contrast to the variegated hues of the breast-plate and ephod, and threw those portions of the attire into greater prominence. If the blue used was indigo, the effect of the contrast must have been heightened...

AND THERE SHALL BE A HOLE IN THE TOP OF IT, IN THE MIDST THEREOF,.... At the neck of it, for the high priest to put his head through when he put it on: IT SHALL HAVE A BINDING OF WOVEN WORK ROUND ABOUT THE HOLE OF IT; a large hem or selvage, perhaps of the same kind of woven stuff the robe itself was made of, and this was done to strengthen it: AS IT WERE THE HOLE OF AN HABERGEON; a corslet or coat of mail; THAT IT BE NOT RENT; when the high priest put it on; or through the weight of the ephod and the ouches of gold on the shoulder pieces of it, and the breastplate hanging down from thence; this may denote the strength and duration of Christ's righteousness, which is an everlasting one....

Here we find, no doubt, a simple assumption that Aaron and his sons wore the same vestments as were worn by the Zadokite High Priest and his assistants in the Temple of Zerub- babel. _a hole for the head_, &c. It was not open behind or in front: it had simply a hole at the top, and was thrown over the head in the manner of a jersey. _woven work_ THE WORK OF THE WEAVER (Exodus 36:1). In ch. 39. these words are attached not to the -binding" (_v._23), but to the robe itself (_v._22); and that is probably their original place here (after -of the ephod" in _v._31). The binding was to keep the edge of the hole from fraying. _a coat of mail_ Heb. _taḥărâh_, only here and in the ", Exodus 39:23: Onk. שריון _a coat of mail_. No doubt, a LINEN CORSELET, the λινοθώρηξ of the Greeks (_Il._ii. 529), is what is meant; Herodotus (ii. 182, iii. 47) mentions two made in Egypt for Amâsis....
