Verse Genesis 13:11. _THEN LOT CHOSE HIM ALL THE PLAIN_] A little civility or good breeding is of great importance in the concerns of life. Lot either had none, or did not profit by it. He certainly should have left the choice to the patriarch, and should have been guided by his counsel; but he took his _own_ way, trusting to his own judgment, and guided only by the sight of his eyes: _he beheld all_ _the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered_, c. so he chose the _land_, without considering the character of the _inhabitants_, or what advantages or disadvantages it might afford him in spiritual things. In the main from J, as is shown by the frequent mention of Yahweh, the reference to the garden of Yahweh, the preparation for the story of Sodom's overthrow in the mention of its exceeding sinfulness, and the phraseology. It was. selfish choice, an unwise choice, and the turning point of his own life downward. Henceforth misfortunes accumulate; he is made. captive by marauders and his property taken; he has to flee from Sodom to escape its fate and loses his wife; his history closes in shame. This plain is. great cleft from one to eight miles wide, by 120 long, and from 1000 to 2000 feet deep, lying at the Dead Sea 1316 feet below the level of the Mediterranean. THEY SEPARATED THEMSELVES.
