_SO JACOB CAME TO LUZ, WHICH IS IN THE LAND OF CANAAN, THAT IS, BETHEL, HE AND ALL THE PEOPLE THAT WERE WITH HIM._ So Jacob came to Luz ... that is, Beth-el. It is probable that this place was unoccupied ground when Jacob first went to it. (See the note at Genesis 28:11.) The name of Beth-el, which was now renewed and which would of course, be confined to Jacob and his family, did not supersede the original one, Luz, until long after. It is now identitled with the modern Beitin, and lies on the western slope of the mountain on which Abraham built his altar (Genesis 13:8)....
