Hebrews 9:15

And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. FOR THIS CAUSE - the all-cleansing power of His blood fits Him to be Mediator of the new covenant (Hebrews 8:6), securing forgiveness for the sins not covered by the former imperfect covenant, and also an eternal inheritance to the called. BY MEANS OF DEATH, [ thanatou (G2288) genomenou (G1096)] - 'death having taken place.' At the moment that His death took place, 'the called received the (fulfillment of the) promise' ...

15._And for this cause he is Mediator of the New Testament, etc. _He concludes that there is no more need of another priest, for Christ fulfills the office under the New Testament; for he claims not for Christ the honor of a Mediator, so that others may at the same time remain as such with him; but he maintains that all others were repudiated when Christ undertook the office. But that he might more fully confirm this fact, he mentions how he commenced to discharge his office of a Mediator; even through death intervening. Since this is found alone in Christ, being wanting in all others, it follows that he alone can be justly deemed a Mediator. (151) He further records the virtue and efficacy of his death by saying that he paid the price for sins under the _first covenant _or testament, which could not be blotted out by the blood of beasts; by which words he was seeking draw away the Jews...

15-22 The solemn transactions between God and man, are sometimes called a covenant, here a testament, which is a willing deed of a person, bestowing legacies on such persons as are described, and it only takes effect upon his death. Thus Christ died, not only to obtain the blessings of salvation for us, but to give power to the disposal of them. All, by sin, were become guilty before God, had forfeited every thing that is good; but God, willing to show the greatness of his mercy, proclaimed a covenant of grace. Nothing could be clean to a sinner, not even his religious duties; except as his guilt was done away by the death of a sacrifice, of value sufficient for that end, and unless he continually depended upon it. May we ascribe all real good works to the same all-procuring cause, and offer our spiritual sacrifices as sprinkled with Christ's blood, and so purified from their defilement....

Verse 15. _AND FOR THIS CAUSE_] Some translate διατουτο, _on_ _account of this_ (blood.) Perhaps it means no more than a mere inference, such as _therefore_, or _wherefore_. _HE IS THE MEDIATOR OF THE NEW TESTAMENT_] There was no proper reason why our translators should render διαθηκη by _testament_ here, when in almost every other case they render it _covenant_, which is its proper ecclesiastical meaning, as answering to the Hebrew ברית _berith_, which see largely explained, Genesis 15:10, and in other places of the Pentateuch. Very few persons are satisfied with the translation of the following verses to the _20_th, particularly the _16_th and _17_th; at all events the word _covenant_ must be retained. _He _- Jesus Christ, is _Mediator_; the μεσιτης, or mediator

AND FOR THIS CAUSE - With this view; that is, to make an effectual atonement for sin, and to provide a way by which the troubled conscience may have peace. HE IS THE MEDIATOR - see notes on Galatians 3:19. He is the Mediator between God and man in respect to that new covenant which he has made, or that new dispensation by which people are to be saved. He stands between God and man - the parties at variance - and undertakes the work of mediation and reconciliation. EXPOSITION _The sphere _of Christ's "more excellent ministry," as the "Mediator of a better covenant," having been shown to be elsewhere than in the earthly tabernacle, the ministry itself is now contrasted with that of the superseded priesthood. With this view the latter is described, and shown to express in itself its own insufficiency and to point to a more availing one to come.
