Verse 27. _AS IT IS APPOINTED_] αποκειται. It is _laid before_ _them_ by the Divine decree: _Dust thou art, and unto dust thou shalt_ _return_. _Unto men_ generally, during the course of the present world, not _all men_ as some falsely quote; for Enoch and Elijah have not died, and those that shall be alive at the day of judgment shall not _die_, but be _changed_. _BUT AFTER THIS THE JUDGMENT_] They _shall die_ but _once_, and be _judged_ but once, therefore there is no _metempsychosis_, no _transmigration from body to body_; judgment succeeds to dying; and as they shall be _judged_ but _once_, they can _die_ but _once_....

Thus, it is with “death.” That does not, and cannot occur many times. It is the great law of our being that people die only once, and hence, the same thing was to be expected to occur in regard to him who made the atonement. It could not be supposed that this great law pertaining to man would be departed from in the case of him who died to make the atonement, and that he would repeatedly undergo the pains of death.
