24._For Christ is not entered, etc. _This is a confirmation of the former verse. He had spoken of the true sanctuary, even the heavenly; he now adds that Christ entered there. Verse 24. _CHRIST IS NOT ENTERED INTO THE HOLY PLACES MADE WITH_ _hands_] He is not gone into the _holy of holies_ of the _tabernacle_ or _temple_, as the Jewish high priest does once in the year with the blood of the victim, to sprinkle it before the mercy-seat there; but _into heaven itself_, which he has thus opened to all believers, having made the propitiatory offering by which both he and those whom he represents are entitled to enter and enjoy eternal blessedness. The Jewish high priest alone entered into the most holy place; and the other priests into the holy place. Jesus, being of the tribe of Judah, and not of Levi, never entered the temple proper. The surpassing worth of Christ's sacrifice, as compared with those of the first covenant, is again enforced. To cleanse the Tabernacle, which was the earthly type of the sanctuary in heaven, the sprinkling of blood was necessary; but the heavenly sanctuary itself had to be cleansed with blood more precious. It is conceived as incurring a certain defilement through contact with the sins that are absolved in it. A cleansing is therefore necessary, as in the case of the earthly sanctuary.
