Verse Isaiah 32:17. _THE WORK OF RIGHTEOUSNESS_] Righteousness works and produces peace. _THE EFFECT OF RIGHTEOUSNESS_] עבדת _abodath, the culture_. Righteousness, _cultivated_ by peace, produces tranquillity of mind and permanent security. Reader, hast thou the principle? If so, dost thou cultivate it? If thou dost, thou hast peace of conscience, joy in the Holy Ghost, and a sure and certain hope of everlasting life....

AND THE WORK OF RIGHTEOUSNESS - That which righteousness produces; or the effect of the prevalence of righteousness on the nation. SHALL BE PEACE - There shall be no internal agitation, and no conflicts with foreign nations. QUIETNESS AND ASSURANCE - This is a beautiful description of the happy effect of the prevalence of piety; and it is as true now as it was in the time of Isaiah. True religion would put an end to strifes and litigations; to riots and mobs; to oppressions and tumults; to alarms and robbery; to battle, and murder, and conflict....

ISAIAH 32. This chapter is regarded by some scholars as non-Isaianic on the ground of phraseology and ideas, but while it may have been interpolated, it is probably in the main Isaiah's work. It falls into two parts: (_a_) Isaiah 32:1, (_b_) Isaiah 32:9. The date of the former is uncertain. It may belong to the same period as Isaiah 28-31. The address to the women which follows recalls the denunciation in Isaiah 3:16, but it does not necessarily belong to the same period. And it too may belong to the same period as Isaiah 28-31.
