Isaiah 32:18

And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places; AND MY PEOPLE SHALL DWELL IN ... SURE DWELLINGS, AND IN QUIET RESTING PLACES - free from fear of invasion....

18._And my people shall dwell. _As we have said that spiritual righteousness is that which has its seat in the hearts of men, we must say the same thing about peace, which is the fruit of it. Accordingly, when _quiet habitations _and _resting-places _are here mentioned, let us remember the saying of Paul, “justified by faith, we have peace with God.” (Romans 5:1.) When Christ says that he “leaves” this peace to the disciples, (John 14:27,) he affirms that “it cannot be given by the world;” and we ought not to wonder at this, for, as the same Apostle Paul informs us in another passage, “this peace surpasses all understanding.” (Philippians 4:7.) Having obtained this righteousness, we are no longer restless or alarmed within, as when we feel in the gnawings

9-20 When there was so much provocation given to the holy God, bad times might be expected. Alas! how many careless ones there are, who support self-indulgence by shameful niggardliness! We deserve to be deprived of the supports of life, when we make them the food of lusts. Let such tremble and be troubled. AND MY PEOPLE SHALL DWELL IN A PEACEABLE HABITATION - In cities and towns that would not be alarmed bv internal or external foes. AND IN SURE DWELLINGS - In dwellings that would be secure from invasion. - All this is descriptive of the peaceful times, and the general security which followed the return from Babylon. ISAIAH 32. This chapter is regarded by some scholars as non-Isaianic on the ground of phraseology and ideas, but while it may have been interpolated, it is probably in the main Isaiah's work. It falls into two parts: (_a_) Isaiah 32:1, (_b_) Isaiah 32:9. The date of the former is uncertain. It may belong to the same period as Isaiah 28-31. The address to the women which follows recalls the denunciation in Isaiah 3:16, but it does not necessarily belong to the same period. And it too may belong to the same period as Isaiah 28-31. There is no need to detach the Messianic passage, Isaiah 32:15, from it....

Isaiah 32:9-20 To the Women of Jerusalem Like the previous sections (Isaiah 29:1 ff., Isaiah 29:15 ff., Isaiah 30:31) this passage is divided into two parts, the announcement of judgment on Jerusalem, and a description of the Messianic salvation (see the analysis below).
