Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat? WHEREFORE (ART THOU) RED IN THINE APPAREL? ... The prophet asks why His garments are "dyed" and "red." WINEFAT - rather, the wine-press, wherein the grapes were trodden with the feet, from which the juice would flow off into the wine vat: the juice would stain the garment of him who trod them (Revelation 14:19; ). 2._Wherefore is thy raiment red? _He proceeds with the same subject; but, as it would have impaired the force of the narrative, he does not immediately explain whence came the red color of God’s garments, but continues to put questions, that he may arouse their minds to the consideration of what is strange and uncommon. He means that this sprinkling of blood is something remarkable and extraordinary. The comparison drawn from a “wine-press” is highly appropriate; for the town Bozrah, which he mentioned a little before, lay in a vine-bearing district. Verse Isaiah 63:2. _WHEREFORE_ ART THOU _RED IN THINE APPAREL_] For ללבושך _lilebushecha, twenty-nine_ MSS. (_nine_ ancient) of _Kennicott's_, and _thirty_ of _De Rossi's_, and _one_ edition, have ללבושיך _lilebusheycha_ in the plural; so the _Septuagint_ and _Syriac_. And all the ancient Versions read it with מ _mem_, instead of the first ל _lamed_. But the true reading is probably מלבושך _malbushecha_ in the singular, as in Isaiah 63:3. - L....

WHEREFORE ART THOU RED? - The inquiry of the people. Whence is it that that gorgeous apparel is stained with blood? AND THY GARMENT LIKE HIM THAT TREADETH IN THE WINE-FAT? - Or rather the ‘wine-press.’ The word used here (גת _gath_) means the place where the grapes were placed to be trodden with the feet, and from which the juice would flow off into a vat or receptacle. THE TRIUMPH OF YAHWEH. In this poem, isolated from its context, the poet, looking into the future, sees a solitary but majestic warrior striding along, his splendid garments all bloodstained.
