Verse Isaiah 63:6. _AND MAKE THEM DRUNK IN MY FURY_ - "And I crushed them in mine indignation"] For ואשכרם _vaashkerem, and I made them drunken,_ _twenty-seven_ MSS., (_three_ ancient,) _twelve_ of _De Rossi's_, and the old edition of 1488, have ואשברם _vaashabberem, and I crushed_ _them_: and so the _Syriac_ and _Chaldee_. AND I WILL TREAD THEM DOWN - Or rather, ‘I did tread them down.’ The allusion here is to a warrior who tramples on his foes and treads them in the dust (see the notes at Isaiah 25:10). AND MADE THEM DRUNK - That is, I made them reel and fall under my fury like a drunken man. In describing the destruction of Idumea in Isaiah 34:5, Yahweh says that his sword was made drunk, or that it rushed intoxicated from heaven. See the notes on that verse. THE TRIUMPH OF YAHWEH. In this poem, isolated from its context, the poet, looking into the future, sees a solitary but majestic warrior striding along, his splendid garments all bloodstained. Who, he asks, is this? To which Yahweh Himself, for it is He, makes answer, I, resplendent in triumph, mighty to deliver. Why, asks the poet, is Thine apparel stained red like the garments of the grape-treader? Yahweh answers, A wine-trough indeed have I trodden and the nations lent Me no aid.
