As the Prophet had promised a return to the people, he now reproves especially the Israelites, who looked here and there, and never could acquiesce in the word of God alone: for it is a common thing with almost all the unbelieving, that they torment themselves, and, as it were, designedly contrive for themselves many inquietudes. Verse Jeremiah 31:22. _A WOMAN SHALL COMPASS A MAN_] נקבה תסובב גבר _nekebah_ _tesobeb gaber_, "A weak woman shall compass or circumvent a strong man." This place has given much trouble to Biblical critics. By many Christian writers it is considered a prophecy of the _miraculous conception of the holy virgin_; but as I am sure no such meaning is in the _words_, nor in the _context_, so I am satisfied no such meaning can be fairly brought out of them. _Houbigant_ thinks there is a small error in the text, i.e., תשובב _teshobeb_, shall _return_, and not תסובב _tesobeb_, shall _compass_.
