And the measuring line shall yet go forth over against it upon the hill Gareb, and shall compass about to Goath. THE MEASURING LINE - (Ezekiel 40:8; Zechariah 2:1). GAREB - from a Hebrew root [gaarab], to scrape; Syriac, leprosy: the locality outside the city where lepers were removed to. GOATH - from a root [ gaawa` (H1478)] to lose one's breath with toil, to toil, referring to the toilsome ascent there: outside of the city of David, toward the southwest, as Gareb was northwest (Junius)....

He afterwards adds, _Yet go forth shall the line of measure before him _Some apply this to the gate, because from the gate the line was to be extended to _the hill Gareb, and go round to Goath _Of these names of places I cannot say much, for we do not know the ancient situation of the city; and the Jews themselves, when they make conjectures about these uncertain things, shew only their own ignorance. However, the greater part of interpreters understand this, — that the city was to be large, as though God promised that he would extend it beyond the walls; and this they illicit from the verb יצא _itsa, go forth shall the line, _or cord, _of measure _But when the Prophet says _yet, _he compares the ancient greatness of the city with that which he perceives it to be hereafter. 35-40 As surely as the heavenly bodies will continue their settled course, according to the will of their Creator, to the end of time, and as the raging sea obeys him, so surely will the Jews be continued a separate people. Words can scarcely set forth more strongly the restoration of Israel. The rebuilding of Jerusalem, and its enlargement and establishment, shall be an earnest of the great things God will do for the gospel church. The personal happiness of every true believer, as well as the future restoration of Israel, is secured by promise, covenant, and oath. This Divine love passes knowledge; and to those who take hold upon it, every present mercy is an earnest of salvation....

Verse Jeremiah 31:39. _UPON THE HILL GAREB_] _Gareb_ and _Goath_ are out of the limits of this city. The latter is supposed to be _Golgotha_; that is, the _heap of Gotha_, which, being the place where our Lord was crucified, was _without the city_. These hills were a little to the north-west of the old city walls: but are destined to be _within_ the new city. See Dr. _Blayney_ on all these verses....

EXPOSITION JEREMIAH 31:1 The promise of Jeremiah 30:22 is expressly declared to apply to both sections of the nation. Jehovah thus solemnly declares his purpose of mercy, and dwells with special Madness on the happy future of Ephraim. JEREMIAH 31:2 THE PEOPLE which were LEFT OF THE SWORD, etc.; literally, _the people of those left of the sword. _The expression clearly implies that the Jews at the time spoken of had escaped, or were about to escape, in some great battle or some other kind of slaughter. AND THE MEASURING LINE SHALL YET GO FORTH OVER AGAINST IT,.... Or, "before it" p; the gate proceeding right on from it; of the length of the measuring line, or reed; see Ezekiel 40:5; though some render it, "before him" q; before the Lord, under whose direction and powerful providence the work went on; so the city gates and walls of the New Jerusalem are said to be measured with a reed, Revelation 21:15; UPON THE HILL GAREB; which signifies a "scab", so called, as is supposed, from scabby and leprous persons sent here to dwell, which was a "lazaretto" for them. Lightfoot, following Lyra, takes it to be the same with Mount Calvary: it was on the north side of the city, bending to the west; and, if the same with Calvary, it was on the west side. The Targum renders it, ...

Israel's national existence shall be as permanent as Yahweh's rule of nature (Jeremiah 31:35 f.); it is as impossible for Israel to be rejected as it is for man to comprehend the created world (Jeremiah 31:37). In the future, Jerusalem shall be rebuilt from the NE. to the NW. corner (Zechariah 14:10), and (apparently) southwards, and shall include even the Valley of Hinnom (desecrated by human sacrifices to Molech, Jeremiah 7:31) as far as the SE. corner (the horse gate, Nehemiah 3:28)....
