Jeremiah 49:14

I have heard a rumour from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent unto the heathen, saying, Gather ye together, and come against her, and rise up to the battle. I HAVE HEARD A RUMOUR FROM THE LORD, AND AN AMBASSADOR IS SENT UNTO THE HEATHEN ... RISE UP TO THE BATTLE. Herein Jeremiah embodies in his own prophecies, and gives inspired sanction to Obadiah's words. (Obadiah 1:1, "We have heard a rumour from the Lord, and an ambassador is sent among the pagan ... let us rise up against her in battle"). AMBASSADOR ... UNTO THE HEATHEN - a messenger from God to stir up the Chaldeans against Edom....

The Prophet again shews that God would be the author of the calamity of which he speaks; for if things were viewed by men, no one could have thought that the Idumeans could in so short a time be destroyed. It was therefore necessary for the faithful to raise upwards their minds. And this the Prophet had in view when he said that all this would be from God. But most forcible are his words when he says, _We have heard a hearing; _some say, “a report,” but improperly, as I think; for though, שמועה, _shemuoe_, often means a report or rumor, yet here it ought to be taken for a proclamation, which God published as it were by his own heralds. For the similitude is taken from men, proclaiming war against their enemies by a solemn rite. Verse Jeremiah 49:14. _I HAVE HEARD A RUMOUR_] The Lord has revealed to me what he is about to do to the Edomites. _AN AMBASSADOR IS SENT_] I believe this means only that God has given _permission_, and has _stirred up_ the hearts of these nations to go against those whom he has doomed to destruction....

Edom stretched along the south of Judah from the border of Moab on the Dead Sea to the Mediterranean and the Arabian deserts, and held the same relation to Judah which Moab held toward the kingdom of Israel. Although expressly reserved from attack by Moses Deuteronomy 2:5, a long feud caused the Edomites to cherish so bitter an enmity against Judah, that they exulted with cruel joy over the capture of Jerusalem by the Chaldaeans, and showed great cruelty toward those why fled to them for refuge.
