Jeremiah 49:5

Behold, I will bring a fear upon thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts, from all those that be about thee; and ye shall be driven out every man right forth; and none shall gather up him that wandereth. YE SHALL BE DRIVEN OUT EVERY MAN RIGHT FORTH - wheresoever chance may lead him (; ); straight before him onward at random (). NONE SHALL GATHER UP HIM THAT WANDERETH - there shall be none to gather together the wandering fugitives, so as to entertain them and restore them to their own homes....

Jeremiah at length concludes his prophecy, by saying, that God would dissipate that foolish confidence through which the Ammonites were filled with pride, _because he would bring a terror _on them. He sets up terror in opposition to that security in which the Ammonites lay torpid; for they were inebriated, as it were, with their pleasures. And then the strongholds by which they thought themselves protected, so hardened their hearts, that they feared no danger. God then sets up this terror in opposition to the false arrogance by which they were inflated: _I bring_, then, _a terror from all around thee. _And this was not without reason added, for the Ammonites thought that they could, on some side, escape, if enemies pressed hard on them; and as there were many outlets, they thought it impossible that they should fall into the hands of enemies. The Ammonite territory lay eastward of part of that assigned to Gad, between Heshbon and the river Jabbok; the Ammonites appear to have occupied the territory of Gad after the deportation of its inhabitants in 734 (2 Kings 15:29). V. AN ORACLE AGAINST AMMON Jeremiah 49:1-6 TRANSLATION (1) Against the children of Ammon. AGAINST AMMON, EDOM, AND OTHER NATIONS 1-6. The territory of Ammon was N. of Moab, and the two peoples were connected by descent. The carrying away of the tribes on the E. of Jordan by Tiglath-pileser, king of Assyria (2 Kings 15:29), strengthened the hands of Ammon, and it is their occupation of the portion of Gad upon that occasion that forms the crime which is dwelt on in this prophecy, and which shall bring on them judgment....
