13-17 See what care and pains wicked men take to compass their wicked designs; let it shame our negligence and slothfulness in doing good. See what pains those take, who make provision for the flesh to fulfil the lusts of it: pains to compass, and then to hide that which will end in death and hell at last. Less pains would mortify and crucify the flesh, and be life and heaven at last. Shame came in with sin, and everlasting shame is at the end of it. See the misery of sinners; they are exposed to continual frights: yet see their folly; they are afraid of coming under the eye of men, but have no dread of God's eye, which is always upon them: they are not afraid of doing things which they are afraid of being known to do....

Verse Job 24:15. _THE EYE ALSO OF THE ADULTERER_] This is another sin particularly of the city. The _adulterer_ has made his _assignation_; he has _marked the house_ of her into whose good graces he has _insinuated himself_, called _digging through the house_; he _waits_ impatiently _for the dusk_; and then goes forth, having _muffled_ or _disguised his face_, and spends a criminal night with the faithless wife of another man. The _morning dawns_: but it is to him as the _shadow of death_, lest he should be detected before he can reach his own home. _And if one know him _- if he happen to be _recognized_ in coming out of the forbidden house; _the terrors of_ _death_ seize upon him, being afraid that the thing shall be brought to light, or that he shall be called to account, a sanguinary account, by the injured husband...

THE EYE ALSO OF THE ADULTERER WAITETH FOR THE TWILIGHT; - compare the description in Proverbs 7:8, “He went the way to her house; in the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night.” AND DISGUISETH HIS FACE - Margin, “setteth his face in secret.” The meaning is, that he put a mask on his face, lest he should be recognized. EXPOSITION The general subject of this chapter is the prosperity of the wicked, whose proceedings and their results are traced out in detail (Job 24:2). A single note of perplexity (Job 24:1) forms a sufficient introduction; and a single note of challenge a sufficient epilogue (Job 24:25). JOB 24:1 WHY, SEEING TIMES ARE NOT HIDDEN FROM THE ALMIGHTY. Not of the morning, which would not give him time enough to satiate his lust, but of the evening, that he may have the whole night before him to gratify his impure desires, and that these may be indulged in the most private and secret manner; and having fixed the time in the evening with his adulteress, he waits with impatience, and earnestly wishes and longs for its coming, and diligently looks out for the close of day, and takes the first opportunity of the darkness of the evening to set out on his adventure, see Proverbs 7:7; and the "eye" is particularly observed, not only because that is the instrument by which the twilight is discerned, and is industriously employed in looking out for it, but is full of adultery, as the Apostle Peter expresses it, 2

Job 24:1. _Why, seeing times are not hidden from the Almighty, do they that know him not see his days?_ «Why do they live so long? Why do they appear to have such prosperity?» Job 24:2. _Some remove the landmarks; they violently take away flocks, and feed thereof. JOB 24. This chapter has since Merx in 1871 been subjected to much criticism, the general trend of which has been to deny the whole or a considerable part of the chapter to Job. Peake, however, considers that the chapter as a whole reflects Job's point of view, though alien elements are to be recognised in it. Davidson sums up the chapter under the heading: The Divine rectitude which Job misses in his own instance he equally misses in the broad field of the world.
