_HE IS SWIFT AS THE WATERS; THEIR PORTION IS CURSED IN THE EARTH: HE BEHOLDETH NOT THE WAY OF THE VINEYARDS._ In these verses Job quotes the opinion of his adversaries, ironically: he quoted them so before (Job 21:17). In Job 24:22 he states his own observation as the opposite. You say, 'The sinner is swift - i:e., swiftly passes away (as a thing floating) - on the surface (literally, on the face) of the waters' (Ecclesiastes 11:1; Hosea 10:7). 18-25 Sometimes how gradual is the decay, how quiet the departure of a wicked person, how is he honoured, and how soon are all his cruelties and oppressions forgotten! Verse Job 24:21. _HE EVIL ENTREATETH THE BARREN_] I believe the original word ולה should be translated _he feedeth_, and so the _Vulgate_ understood the word: _Pavit enim sterilem_. He has been kind to the barren woman; but he has done no good to the widow. He has shown no mercy to _large families_; he has been an enemy to the procreation of children. Though he may, for particular reasons, have provided for a _barren woman_; yet the _widow_ he has not comforted, she being old or infirm, or such as might not suit his purpose....

HE EVIL ENTREATETH THE BARREN - The woman who has no children to comfort or support her. He increases her calamity by acts of cruelty and oppression. To be without children, as is well known, was regarded, in the patriarchal ages, as a great calamity. AND DOETH NOT GOOD TO THE WIDOW - See the notes at Job 24:3. Notwithstanding all this, he is permitted to live in prosperity, and to die without any visible tokens of the divine displeasure....

EXPOSITION The general subject of this chapter is the prosperity of the wicked, whose proceedings and their results are traced out in detail (Job 24:2). A single note of perplexity (Job 24:1) forms a sufficient introduction; and a single note of challenge a sufficient epilogue (Job 24:25). JOB 24:1 WHY, SEEING TIMES ARE NOT HIDDEN FROM THE ALMIGHTY. JOB 24. This chapter has since Merx in 1871 been subjected to much criticism, the general trend of which has been to deny the whole or a considerable part of the chapter to Job. Peake, however, considers that the chapter as a whole reflects Job's point of view, though alien elements are to be recognised in it. Davidson sums up the chapter under the heading: The Divine rectitude which Job misses in his own instance he equally misses in the broad field of the world.
