_IS IT FIT TO SAY TO A KING, THOU ART WICKED? AND TO PRINCES, YE ARE UNGODLY?_ Literally, (Is it fit) to be said to a king? It would be a gross outrage to reproach thus an earthly monarch, much more the King of kings (Exodus 22:28). But Maurer, with the Septuagint, and Vulgate, reads (It is not fit to accuse of injustice Him) who says to a king, Thou art wicked; to princes, Ye are ungodly - i:e., who punishes impartially the great as the small. This accords with Job 34:19. He remarks that the English version would require the infinitive absolute х_ HE'AAMOR_ (H559)], whereas the Hebrew is х_ HA'ªMOR_ (H559)]. He reads х_ HAA'OMEER_ (H559)], 'who says.'...

16-30 Elihu appeals directly to Job himself. Could he suppose that God was like those earthly princes, who hate right, who are unfit to rule, and prove the scourges of mankind? It is daring presumption to condemn God's proceedings, as Job had done by his discontents. Elihu suggests divers considerations to Job, to produce in him high thoughts of God, and so to persuade him to submit. Job had often wished to plead his cause before God. Elihu asks, To what purpose? All is well that God does, and will be found so. What can make those uneasy, whose souls dwell at ease in God? The smiles of all the world cannot quiet those on whom God frowns....

Verse Job 34:18. IS IT FIT _TO SAY TO A KING_, THOU ART _WICKED?_] The sentence is very short, and is thus translated by the VULGATE: _Qui_ _dicit regi, Apostata? Qui vocat duces impios?_ "Who says to a king, Apostate? Who calls leaders impious ?" Literally, _Who calls a king_ _Belial? Who calls princes wicked_? Civil governors should be treated with respect; no man should speak evil of the ruler of the people. This should never be permitted. Even where the man cannot be respected, because his _moral conduct_ is improper, even there the _office_ is sacred, and should be reverenced. He who permits himself to talk against the _man_, would destroy the _office_ and _authority_, if he could....

Respect is due to those of elevated rank. Their plans are often concealed. It is difficult to judge of them until they are fully developed. To condemn those plans, and to use the language of complaint, would not be tolerated, and would be grossly improper. How much more so when that language relates to the Great, the Infinite God, and to his eternal plans!” It may be added here, in accordance with the sentiment of Elihu, that people often indulge in thoughts and language about God which they would not tolerate respecting an earthly monarch....

EXPOSITION JOB 34:1 In this chapter Elihu turns from Job to those whom he addresses as "wise men" (verse 2), or "men of understanding" (verse 10). Whether these are Job's three special friends, or others among the company which had perhaps gathered to hear the debate, is uncertain. He makes the subject of his address to them Job's conduct—scarcely a polite thing to do in Job's presence. Job, he says, has scorned God and charged him with injustice (verses 5-9). He will vindicate him. This he proceeds to do in verses 10-30. He then points out what Job's course ought to be (verses 31-33), and winds up by an appeal to the "men of understanding" to endorse his condemnation of Job as a sinner and a rebel (verses 34-37).
