_THEREFORE HE KNOWETH THEIR WORKS, AND HE OVERTURNETH THEM IN THE NIGHT, SO THAT THEY ARE DESTROYED._ Therefore - because He knows all things (Job 34:21), He knows their works, without a formal investigation (Job 34:24). Umbreit, less simply, for "over-turneth" х_ HAAPAK_ (H2015)], translates, 'walketh' - i:e., God is ever on the alert, discovering all wickedness....

16-30 Elihu appeals directly to Job himself. Could he suppose that God was like those earthly princes, who hate right, who are unfit to rule, and prove the scourges of mankind? It is daring presumption to condemn God's proceedings, as Job had done by his discontents. Elihu suggests divers considerations to Job, to produce in him high thoughts of God, and so to persuade him to submit. Job had often wished to plead his cause before God. Elihu asks, To what purpose? All is well that God does, and will be found so. What can make those uneasy, whose souls dwell at ease in God? The smiles of all the world cannot quiet those on whom God frowns....

Verse Job 34:25. _HE KNOWETH THEIR WORKS_] He knows what they have done, and what they are _plotting_ to do. _HE OVERTURNETH_ THEM _IN THE NIGHT_] In the revolution of a single night the plenitude of power on which the day closed is annihilated. See the cases of Belshazzar and Babylon....

THEREFORE HE KNOWETH THEIR WORKS - Or, “Because he knoweth their works.” The word (לכן _lākên_) here rendered “therefore” is evidently used as denoting that since or because he was intimately acquainted with all which they did, he could justly bring vengeance upon them without long investigation. AND HE OVERTURNETH THEM IN THE NIGHT - literally, “he turneth night;” meaning, probably, he turns night upon them; that is, he brings calamity upon them. The word “night” is often used to denote calamity, or ruin. Umbreit understands it in the sense of “turning about the night;” that is, that they had covered up their deeds as in the night, but that God “so turns the night about” as to bring them to the light of day. EXPOSITION JOB 34:1 In this chapter Elihu turns from Job to those whom he addresses as "wise men" (verse 2), or "men of understanding" (verse 10). Whether these are Job's three special friends, or others among the company which had perhaps gathered to hear the debate, is uncertain. He makes the subject of his address to them Job's conduct—scarcely a polite thing to do in Job's presence. Job, he says, has scorned God and charged him with injustice (verses 5-9).
