Verse Job 34:36. _MY DESIRE IS THAT JOB MAY BE TRIED UNTO THE END_] אבי יבחן איוב _abi yibbachen Aiyob_, "My father, let Job be tried." So the VULGATE, _Pater mi, probetur Job_. But it may be as in the common translation, _I wish Job to be tried_; or, as Mr. _Good_ renders it, _Verily, let Job be pursued to conquest for replying_ _like wicked men_. This is a very harsh wish: but the whole chapter is in the same spirit; nearly destitute of mildness and compassion. Who could suppose that such arguings could come out of the mouth of the loving Saviour of mankind? The reader will recollect that a very pious divine has supposed _Elihu_ to be _Jesus Christ_!...

MY DESIRE IS - Margin, “or, “my father, let Job be tried.”” This variation between the text and the margin, arises from the different interpretations affixed to the Hebrew word אבי _'âbiy_. The Hebrew word commonly means “father,” and some have supposed that that sense is to be retained here, and then it would be a solemn appeal to God as his Father - expressing the earnest prayer of Elihu that Job might be fully tried. But the difficulties in this interpretation are obvious: (1) Such a mode of appeal to God occurs nowhere else in the book, and it is little in the spirit of the poem. No particular reason can be assigned why that solemn appeal should be made here, rather than in many other places. (2) The name “Father,” though often given to God in the Scriptures, is not elsewhere given to him in this book....

EXPOSITION JOB 34:1 In this chapter Elihu turns from Job to those whom he addresses as "wise men" (verse 2), or "men of understanding" (verse 10). Whether these are Job's three special friends, or others among the company which had perhaps gathered to hear the debate, is uncertain. He makes the subject of his address to them Job's conduct—scarcely a polite thing to do in Job's presence. Job, he says, has scorned God and charged him with injustice (verses 5-9). He will vindicate him. This he proceeds to do in verses 10-30. He then points out what Job's course ought to be (verses 31-33), and winds up by an appeal to the "men of understanding" to endorse his condemnation of Job as a sinner and a rebel (verses 34-37).
